Yes I am a noob. I am 28 and looking to start a new career. I have been running a local truck for a company (Double axle 20k max). Im on the road about 1500 miles a week and realized this is what I really enjoy doing. Id love to get into bigger trucks with bigger loads, however my wife is not happy about the idea of me being gone much. I know there are local routes and such but I assume the pay isnt as good and also in this economy I dont want to have to be s picky when it comes to an opportunity.
I guess my questions are: Are there many routes that are within state lines or allow me to drive 8-12 hours a day but come back to my bed?
What kind of pay should I expect as a trucker or a local trucker?
    What are the shifts like?
Any and all info would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance for taking it easy on a rookie!
    Im in norther California BTW.

Well, there's lots to tell you. Yes you can drive local, which can mean with-in 25 miles of your house as well as maybe going 500 miles round trip. (daily). Freight companies do this as well as aggregates, (sand/gravel). Moving companies too. $12 to $20 hourly is about normal, although could be slightly higher or lower. Trucking is 24/7 normally, however shifts usually 10-12 hrs daily. In your area, cost of living higher than So.Cal>

Year round Feedlot work from grain/corn mills/processing plants/fields to cattle ranches. Long hours, dirty job, but fairly easy.

Note every truck out there that catches your attention.
Then look to see if those trucks are in the truckstops at night.
If not, it's most likely a local job.
Go in and see the company in person.
Most of those jobs are not advertised.

most local jobs here get posted on Craigslist, or go through temp to hire companies... would be worth looking into

Itl company's such as conway etc are usually well paying and will keep you home every or every other night jobs .....if you go over the road for long periods and she don't like it she wont be your wife long .....its different if you were over the road before you were married she would be more understanding but taking off and leaving her alone .....she wont be alone for long .....find a good local job......

Tell her you could always drive in Afghanistan, then tell her others jobs look much better than that.
