I'm currently in a cdl school and I'm about to complete it, I'm also looking for a great company to plant my feet for a while. I'm fine with being gone Monday through Friday but weekends are really important to me, I have custody of my kids and don't want to miss more than I have to. I live in the Hampton roads area of va. Right now I have been looking at comcar and givens. Any suggestions? Thanks

    1.) ask @Chinatown
2.) If you have to be home weekends, this is gonna be tricky, because most companies, being new; you will MAYBE see one weekend a month or so.
    3.) ask @Chinatown

4.) :) Good luck with your endeavours, hope to see you on the road someday!

You probably should have had this figured out shortly after starting (or even before) CDL school. But, I think TMC still boasts about their home time. Other than that, wait for @Chinatown to chime in. He is the resident guru on this type of thing.

Have you considered hauling containers out of the ports? If I lived near a port or rail yard, this is something I would be looking at if I wanted to stay close to home. JB Hunt is not on this list, but I'm pretty sure they hire new CDL holders. http://www.drayage.com/directory/results.cfm?city=NOR

You didn't say which wagon you'd like to pull so here are some flatbed companies that'll get you home weekends.

    Maverick
    TMC
    Melton

    Southeastern Freight Lines

FedEx Freight - • Must possess a class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with double/triple, hazardous materials and tank endorsements
    • Must possess one (1) year experience within most recent three (3) years or successful completion of FedEx Freight Driver Development Course

Longarm listed TMC & Maverick which have weekend home policy.
    Coca-Cola Bottling Company
    Waste Management

Averitt Express sometimes has local or weekends home accounts.

Ignore any "experience required" on trucking company websites and apply anyway. They all bend their rules these days.
You mentioned Comcar; some of those are local or weekends home.
XPO Logistics - home daily/hourly pay
    PepsiCo
Haven't heard much about Givens, but looks like they have what you're looking for.

Keep in mind with most "home weekend carriers", "home weekends" is still very open-ended ... May get home Friday afternoon. May get home Saturday morning at 01:00. May get home Saturday at noon. So still no guarantees about what to tell the ex and the kids.

Also be aware that there are some areas that companies dont recognize as being good for freight. So if they ask you for a zipcode, you should ask them what corridor area they are running. Case in point, most companies here in Maine only go as high as Portland Maine, or with in 50 miles. If your home is beyond that, you may not get the home time you desire. Perhaps you should consider a beverage company or a dirt hauler. Otherwise OTR companies will run you longer than a 5 day trip.

I do, but honestly I don't want to get the OPs hopes up he will get to be home on weekends like this right out of school. I don't think trucking and being a custodial parent mixes well.
