I have an opportunity to have a steady 3-4 months of local work. It is flatbed work and the product to be hauled is bagged topsoil on pallets. It is heavy, close to gross. The place where I would load is 5 minutes from the house and the runs are 5-6 days a week and 2-3 loads a day depending on distance. They recievers are anywhere from 20 miles to 200 miles away one way. I do have steady loads of conrete blocks that I can pick up coming back that delivers about 20 miles from the house. Probably about 3 loads a week of those. I would also be looking for other loads coming back. However, I am looking to put a number per mile together. It is a very convenient haul for me, and I can load myself at night if I get back after hours so that I can get an early start the next morning. What do you think a good rate for this type of situation would be? Thank you.

an old rule of thumb is need to make $500 a day to cover expenses and make a profit, your short haul loads will most likely need to be based on per load and you will to consider tarp pay if you need to tarp the top soil.

think about stop pay also,if you multiple stop per load.your first stop and last stop are part of the price but extra stops will often pay 20-30 dollars per stop,tarp pay will be around 30-50

No tarp. I was thinking $750/day min. All topsoil loads are 1 pickup/1 delivery. The block loads that I have coming back are sometimes multiple stops. Those I am not worried about the rate on, those are already good to go. The tricky thing with the topsoil is that they want you to come right back and grab another load or 2 for the day so it kind of ties your hands on finding other freight coming back. But it needs to be priced accordingly, ie. paid for all miles loaded and empty. Thanks

Like critters said around 500$ a day for your short hauls. Unless we are talking right down the road like 20-30 miles away. Then like 375 is good especially if there are more then one per day. I've done topsoil loads and I think I was doing them for like 2.35 a mile but they were all over 400 miles. Anything under that I priced per load not per mile.

Yea if they want u to hurry back for another then just be sure to cover your miles coming back. When you say 750$ per day is that multiple loads? If so, I might go a little higher, all depends on how much time you gotta put in.

well if you run 400 miles a day 750 a day is about 1.87 per mile not to bad loaded pay great empty pay,it's a fine line you have to walk,not to over price your self out,so i would say somwhere between the 1.87 - 2.oo a mile range would cover time and miles. but that would depends on how many loads and miles traveled in the day,you get over that 400 mile mark and you to lose money.

Nah don't need to put up his rates here. You said it works well for you cause it's close to home. So it sounds like a good set up for you. Don't over price yourself out of a good thing, but make sure it's worth while. Topsoil is heavy don't wanna bang up your equipment for cheap freight. Sounds like you got it under control.
