Alright first off this is an awesome forum and any info is really appreciated!!!!

So I have been looking around and hearing about hauling sand, well my buddy has his Cdl and was telling me if I could get a truck and everything to run it he would drive it. So if I own the truck and have him drive it what requirements would I need on the truck, the company, the driver and starting a hauling company to haul frac sand? I know there would be some slight differences between states and I'm in colorado and the truck would run here and possibly TX. Any info so I have a starting point would be greatly appreciated!!!! Thank you.

The first thing you need is some business experience.
The next thing you need is several years of driving experience.

The thing you need least is to jump into something you know nothing about.

Sounds like your buddy wants you to be the financier and take all the responsibility of owning the truck, while he makes his $$ without any risk. And you say the truck is going to run in a different state? I think you should tread carefully my friend on this. Do you know the sand business inside out? What is you buddy going to take responsibility for? You certainly need a business plan. Do you have money set aside just in case disaster strikes.
    Plenty to think about
    good luck

The guys on here are not going to be gentle with you, and I have to agree with them.

20 to 30 thousand minimum for a truck.
2 + thousand for tags, hut, and permits.
5 thousand when you need tires.
    6 + thousand for maintenance.
10 to 15 thousand for new authority insurance.
2 to 5 thousand + for each dot violation.
3 to 10 thousand if you break down.

0 money coming in if your "buddy" quits.
0 money coming in because you can't run your own truck.
All of the bills keep coming, and coming, and coming.

Until you have a better plan and more experience, run from this idea. It is a nightmare waiting to happen.

You are going to hear a lot of negative post. Do not listen to them. These folks see you as naive but I know you are a visionary. Do your home work. Read through all the different threads. You will see, and keep this just between us friends, that a lot of folks hate to drive to NYC. They hate this because of all the traffic. Just going across the George Washington bridge can take 3 hours. I was thinking that if we could charge folks, we could make a fortune. So, I went to the Port Authority there and asked about buying the GW Bridge. They said that I was in luck. Thanks to the Chris Christie scandal they are wanting to unload themselves of all the bridges. I just need another $248,263. That would give you a 33% share, even though I have already put in 12 times that much. I predict we will be billionaires by the end of this year.

Sorry to go for the laugh. The true answer is that if you want to make money you need to do what everyone else is doing only do it better or do something no one else wants to do. There is a boom in hauling oil sands. I believe you are late at getting into it. So you have to do it better then anyone else is. Does your friend have a new idea on how you can compete? Like maybe hiring lot lizards to ride out to the oil fields with you? If not, then you will have to compete on pricing. That makes your profit margins go down. If all he is after is a truck, you need to charge 11% on your money. If he can't make you money, then do other things with it.

Let's make no mistake on my knowledge or capabilities of running and managing a company or expenses i have backgrounds in management and being a kenworth mechanic so that isn't my question. All I'm looking for is some insight on what these companies are usually requiring for you to be on they're patches? Driver certifications?Insurance minimums? Load minimums? Things like that. Thank you to all the helpful answers, but I have no need for the rude ones that don't help. Sorry if I seem rude I'm not trying to be.
