I am currently enrolled in a private CDL school in NY. I am scheduled for my road test on Sept. 30, 2008. I have been looking into several companies but there is a lot of positive and negative posted on here.

I was looking at the following Wel Companies, Melton, Maverick, Swift, Kreilkamp. Would anyone have any information good or bad about these companies or suggestions on a company I should look in to.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Maverick would be the best, but not sure what div you would be in up there or if you would be in their hiring area. We run up there, but not a lot. They only hire in areas where they have enough freight to get a guy home on weekends.

Maverick only hires for the glass division in NY.
I checked a while ago. I personally would not go there. Kreilkamp I looked at as well, and they scared me. Or posts that I saw, plus talking to a few of there drivers put me on edge, so I never went any further. Swift I never looked into. Some like them, more do not.

Hometime will be an issue with just about any company you can start with. I would look at some of your other choices, then if the one you choose does not work out maybe look at Martin or if flat does not bother you TMC. TMC also may take you from school, and you will get home more than most OTR company's.

Pay will be about the same at any company you start at. The ones with the higher per mile rates you will usually get fewer miles. Benefits will not be great at any OTR company, the best ones are at Union company's ie LTL, that do not hire new drivers, unless they got to a union school, and then have time on the docks ect.

Other than these comments, none of your poll choices are really a choice. You do not have any good choices as a new driver. So you will have to take what you can get.
I did my first year+ in OTR with Central. They were a decent fit for me, but lately I have a hard time pressing people that way. They are going to paperless logs now. They claim that they "have to" and that all company's with tracking have to. But I highly doubt that, since I have not seen an article saying that it is a new regulation.

There are choices better than others... local jobs with large companies such as Pepsi or Sysco, or other local driving jobs for plumbing companies, construction companies.. OTR has fewer good choices for newbies, but I would take Maverick over most others.. or Crete, Shaffer... there are some decent one where you will be treated better for a good start in the industry and receive good training.

RE: Central... lol... I spnet 8 years (whoops, I meant weeks) with them training... what a joke. If they're talking to you... wear boots. It's deep.

Mavericks glass division is rated much poorer by drivers than there flatbed division. This is why I would not look at them.
At least in my area Sysco does not hire new drivers. They want 1 year OTR.
As for construction and other company's, they will hire you. I worked in local positions for many years. Most are hourly, pay is generally low. I made allot more OTR with Central than I ever did local. Though I was in areas that the income needed to survive was not that high. Even when I was driving in Maryland you could live on the pay. Not well though.
Most parts of the country now are 8-14 dollars an hour for local drivers. And you will work allot of hours. 40-70 a week. This driving will not count as driving exp if you want to go to many company's though. The better ones all mostly want 2+ years OTR. This is the issue I had, that sent me to central.

Thanks.. I was not aware of the diff. in divisions... is there a reason? Odd, as one would think same company... it's all good. I was talking to a tanker driver (gas hauler) yesterday here and he drives local, has never beenm OTR, worked driving construction for a couple years (4 I think he said) and landed the tanker job... makes about $65k a year... home every nite. I was surprised to hear that he had no OTR experience... no tanker experience.
