Thanks for the information. Does anyone know if this is typical starting pay for new drivers? Just trying to get a handle since I have read so many negative things about some trucking companies and schools. I don't mind putting in my time to get the experience but want to be sure I am smart about it.

So, smoothgrind, did you start with this school on the 19th? If so, let us know how it goes. Thanks!

ATX - Thanks for the reminder. and also ... Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving! :biggrin_255:

Yes, I did start at A.C.C. on the 19th. and so far it has been pretty cool. All the training is actually at the Gary Job Corps. Center in San Marcos, so it's a little bit of a drive for some of us. One guy is driving in from Elgin every day!:biggrin_2556: The first week is getting everyone ready to test for their CDL-A permit, and endorsements(all the written exams). There are 16 of us in my class including 1 female. The instructors are great so far. They are veteran drivers, and one likes to preach(keeping everyone positive) and one likes to teach(keeping everyone informed). Since the Thanksgiving break was last week, the permit day will be Tuesday in Austin.:biggrin_25524:(would have been last friday).

We had recruiters from Werner(showed up with doughnuts in the morning):biggrin_255: and U.S. Xpress(brought Pizza for lunch):yes2557: come in last Tues. and tell us why we should come and drive for them. They were pitching pretty similar about having the best trucks, and how well they take care of their drivers,:biggrin_25518: except Werner touted 15% stock purchase discounts, and a 401K(50% match up to 3%):biggrin_25525:, and U.S. Xpress doesn't have either of those options:biggrin_25511:, but they claim their mileage pay is higher, and have more miles to offer.:biggrin_2551:
Werner claimed no idle restrictions on their new trucks, and U.S. Xpress just said you can idle. Hmmm, that doesn't match what I've read from some of the drivers that post here.? There's some truth out here somewhere?:biggrin_25512:

I am going to apply to several just to keep more options open, and see how I'm feeling a little closer to graduation day.:biggrin_25519:
Definately looking forward to the driving part of training, and will keep you posted on how it goes.
P.S. I found the imoticons ... Ha Ha pretty funny, but dang, they take up some time! :biggrin_25515: : )
    Laters!

    Hey man,

Thanks for the update and congratulations on getting underway. If you don't mind, please consider starting a new thread telling about your experiences there at the school. I don't find any other info in the Forums about this school in particular. Since it is my first choice due to location, I am obviously extremely interested in how things go for you.

All the best to you and your classmates!

Does anyone have any information on Roadmaster Trucking School out of San Antonio? Additionally are there any of you that recently graduated and went to work in oil fields? If so can you please share your experiences?

    egander1 Thanks this.

I don't know much, but did talk over the phone with someone there. Their tuition is $6,000.00. Austin Community College is $3500.00 plus $160.00 for other fees. RM might be worth the extra $2500.00. They appear to be well regarded. I have no basis to judge them other than price.

ABN7238 let me know if you hear anything about Roadmaster in SanAntonio. This is one I have been looking at as well. It seems pricey compared to the community college but I am willing to pay extra but only if it is going to be worth it.

Hey you guys from Texas check out ATDS in Waco. Pretty good school cost was like 3500 for 4weeks. They put you in a hotel and even shuttle back and forth. They are ptdi certified which some companies only hire from. Sue in the will help place you with jobs and they have recruiters come by. Ya Werner brought us donuts too, us brought pizza, schnieder brought one of there new trucks along with tmc.

    egander1 Thanks this.
