Hey all, I'm looking into purchasing a first truck to have it leased on. I have an offer to buy a 2014 Freightliner Cascadia. It has a ISX cummins Engine. Has 580k on the miles and the asking price is $27k. Any advice? Is this a good deal for how the truck sits? The engine has not been rebuilt yet but they have maintenance records. Is it a good buy? Should I look for something else with less mileage. Anyone have any reviews on how these trucks handle and perform? Just want to know more about them before I pull the trigger. Want to make sure I dont buy it and then regret it having to repair a lot of things.

The number seems ok. The have maintenance records that is a plus. Is it a one company owned truck? Did you try a little negotiation on the price to see if you can get it for cheaper? Will they allow you to have your own mechanic take a look over it? It always best to look around for another truck with less miles & less money but remember less miles isn't always a better truck.
It is how was that truck was maintenanced and how was it ran. Remember there are thousands of trucks out here. Do you homework no need to rush it. All the best to you as you pursue your dreams.OldeSkool Thanks this. -
Thank you IBCALM19. I have not yet tried to negotiate the price until I'm serious about making the purchase. I was told that the truck ran for a rental company prior to their purchase. They owned the truck for about one year and now want to get rid of it. The owner is an older gentleman and said he wants to retire and not deal with this business anymore. They would allow me to bring a mechanic and I will once I do some more research and make up my mind. Thank you for the reply. It helped. Im coming from being a Dispatcher and want to move up and don't want to make any mistakes. I also understand that usually trucks need engine rebuilds around 700k miles and this one is almost at that mileage so since they haven't rebuilt the engine yet I will have to do it sooner or later and its going to cost a pretty penny. So I was debating if I should spend a little more on a truck with less miles or if I can go to like 800-900 without needing a rebuild on it just so I dont buy the truck and then have to put more money into it almost right away.

Have a good maintenance plan in place for your equipment that will help. Don't have a wait until it breaks mentality. You will have moments when things don't go your way. (That's what the rainy day fund is for). These trucks are under a lot of stress day in a day out. We want to catch things ahead of time so our stress is not day to day.
Like any new endeavor there is a learning period so you will have some growing pains. That's the beauty of learning, you are growing at the same time. You are headed in the right direction. Doing your homework & putting a plan in place so you can be successful you are heading in the right direction. There are a lot of other on this forum that will help you as well. There is plenty of information to help you as well.
All the best on your journey -
Thank you for all the help! I really appreciate it.

No rebuild with almost 600k on the clock. Unfortunately the ISX is not typically known to be a million mile engine so expect it to need a rebuild soon.

You need to be able to take any truck you want to buy to a dyno. done to have eng. ck. They will give you a print out on how the eng. is doing and if it looks good then you can have them do a insp. on the truck for anything else wrong with it?

What are you going to do with the truck? What transmission?
What rear gears does it have?
You need to inspect two things closely. Pull valve cover and look at camshaft and rollers on rockers. These engines are known to eat up camshaft and rollers.
Second and this is a total engine killer. High pressure fuel pump head needs to be removed and inspect plungers and shaft in fuel pump. This one shouldn't have the ceramic plungers in it, but they still have trouble out of the fuel pumps. -
