I looked at alot of companies . my kids are almost grown I'm 48. who has any opinions about Prime as a starting job... and is it best to be a company driver ~vs~ lease? i have seen both negative and positive. I had a CDL in 99 B class. buses and straights but I just want some simple advice. I know that after a few years i will have other options to explore with local companies but need some time out for experience.. any pointers

it depends what you want to pull? there are ALOT of better companies to start with then prime. And stay away from Leases unless you enjoy working your butt off for $20,000/yr

I drove for Stevens. Their trucks are set to 62mph. I would blow by Prime trucks! Talked to a Prime driver and he said they are set for 54mph.
Look at Stevens. Excellent school and training program. I also hear good things about Maverick.
Also, do ALOT of research before choosing to go lease. Out of my class of 35 in Stevens school, I was the only one that stayed on the company side. My checks were low but most of the others that went lease were making less than me. One driver that had several years experience had 6 weeks with no bring home pay. They wouldnt get him the miles. Only 1 guy did well on the lease.TennRider Thanks this. -
maverick requires cdl before hiring. i'll look into stephens as well thanks . I'm at the beginning stage so I haven't made a commitment yet

yea. i thought alot about leases. and see alot of NEGATIVES...

whats the average pay? just curious. you know they will make it sound all glamorous.

You don't have a CDL but didn't ask about training . DO NOT take "free" company training . Too many new drivers have not fulfilled their employment obligations with the carrier and got billed thousands of dollars for the school .

I understand that its a year minimum for the obligation . willing to go that route . I could get my CDL here and everything but have no access to driving (skills) with a truck so I'm kinda stuck on that one. and they will still require me to do training time for them. I'm looking for the best starting company thats fair then i'll take teh next step on the training part

go to a private truck driving school.....company schools are NEVER the way to go. Particularly with Stevens IF you bail before your contract is over or if THEY fire you, you are gonna owe a TON of money, they will bill you for all the "free" stuff.
