So, let me start off by saying that I'm very new to CB's, but I'd say I'm far from ignorant. Unlike alot of newblets, I'm not afraid of a little reading, and have done quite a bit up to this point. Anyway, on with the back-story. My dad had a small Realistic in his truck (now my truck) up until I was about nine years old. Well, a few weeks ago, I decided it was time to put a PA system in my truck, and I knew that doing so required a CB. And after a little bit of thought, I figured if I was buying a CB, I might as well get one that's worth a darn so that if I wanted to, I could actually use it effectively. I wound up buying a Cobra 29LX, mainly because I was familiar with the Cobra name, and knew the 29 was a good all around radio, plus the LCD display is really cool. I hooked it up to a Firestik antenna, and took it down to Ladd's Electronics down in Jackson, GA (off of GA I-75 exit 201, these guys are excellent, by the way), and had the radio peaked and tuned, and had my antenna tuned. So far, I've been very pleased with it, but now as I find myself getting more and more interested in CB's, I'm wanting more power and better ears, and SSB. Enter the DX 979.

The main selling points for me on the Galaxy 979 are its compact size (I want to do an in-dash install pretty soon, compactness helps), its starlight display, and SSB. Have any of you guys had any experience with the 979? If so, how do you like it?

Also, if/when I get a 979, I want to put an RXF-75 on it, unlock the clarifier, maybe add a roger beep, and have some receive mods done. How do the Galaxy's hold up to the RXF-75?

Is the RXF-75 even worth getting? Or should I suck it up and get a linear? I don't think I need to be pushing 200 watts and splattering all over the place, but the idea of 80-100 watts from a device on the back of the radio seems rather attractive. (Provided that it's properly installed)

Thanks in advance for all your help, guys.

The galaxy radios don't respond very well to the RFX 75. Meaning they don't get the same amount of output using the RFX 75 as the cobras do.

Don't all galaxy radios have RB fromt he factory?

I would just get a small amp. If the radio is not splattering in the first place then a 200 watt amp won't make it splatter.

At first, I was pleased to read of another person wanting the 979. I have several them, with different setups and love them all. Then I continue reading about you wanting to "ghetto" it up with an RFX-75, roger beep, etc. Seriously, if you want all of that, look for a different radio. That being said, the 979 is awesome with a basic tune and alignment. Put a TNT-350HD from xForce box on that thing and you'll talk to everyone you hear. It has THE best meter I've ever seen on a CB radio. The RFX-75 does not do well on Galaxy radios and is not worth the money. If you want to spend some change on the 979, get the dual-mosfet mod done to it, then add both TopGun modules, open the clarifier and have the Scottky diode mod done. I'd suggest getting the radio and mods done from Sparky's CB Shack. Modded up or tuned/aligned only, the 979 is my favorite radio for a "basic CB radio".

If you want SSB look past Galaxy radios; they drift like sailboats on a river.

A good stable SSB would be an older Cobra 148 built in Taiwan or the Philippines or a Uniden Grant.

Okay. So no RFX-75. After reading a little bit about the TNT-350, I'm definitely wanting one, but just how big is that thing? I want to be able to put it somewhere out of the way in my truck. And as far as getting work done to the radio, while I may order the radio from Sparky's (if my CB shop doesn't have/can't get one), I think I'll take my radio to my somewhat local CB shop to have the work done. I'm not a big fan of not being able to see what's being done to my stuff while it's being done, and the guys at my CB shop actually walk me through what they're doing as they're doing it. And their prices are really good, too. Something like $17 for a peak and tune on the Cobra that I brought them, which would have been free if I bought the radio from them.

The 979 does not, however it's very easy to install one in them. And, for the record, if I do end up putting a roger beep in the 979, it will be switched. And the only reason I'll be putting one in there at all is because I figure it'll help with communications at the outer limits of my range.

Roger beep is for kids. There is nothing more aggravating to listen to.

It would be no help at all with distant comunications. If they can't hear you then they can't hear you and a Roger beep won't help that.

"'ghetto' it up", gotta love that. Roger beep is going to add a slight delay forever since they only switch the audio out when off. The delay is there all of the time. This is a real problem when others quickly speak after you unkey, you miss the first couple seconds of their transmission. Not to mention slight leakage in the switch means you still hear it faintly even when RB is off. I find it difficult to understand why anyone would put it in their radio. I do not think there is a noise mod out there worse than RB and you would not believe how much I hate that ecstasy toy. As bad as it is to me RB is even worse. In MT I had a shop for years where I even offered 10 percent off labor if I could remove RB if there was one already in the radio, yes I hated it that much even way back then. Mainly because at that time there was a group in Billings who all ran 19, used RB's on at all times, and endlessly quick keyed on each other. Maddening to say the least.

Take advice from people who do CB work for a living and those who use them, no RB, and no RFX75 in a 979. At most a proper tuneup, possibly a Viagra board to add bands and maybe turning the clarifier into a slider assuming you keep the range of slide narrow for stability, is as far as you should go with mods. There is a seller on fleabay who has the Viagra boards for sale. Regardless of prior comments the 979 does not drift that bad or that quickly so SSB operation is not a problem. While the older 148's are more stable they are already very old meaning maintenance is an issue. You will be quite happy with a 979 as long as you do not overdo it with bad mods.

A non-hacked 979 is pretty stable after warming up.
