Hey guys, I am currently driving a 1996 western star heritage cab 3406E with 13 speed. I just find this truck terribly uncomfortable, so much so that I am in terrible pain by the end of the day. I have also been looking for a auto due to doing containers here in Philadelphia and the constant traffic I am dealing with throughout the day. Can anyone school me on these trucks and what to look for? Also, I see some with Meritor or Eaton ultrashifts. I am assuming the Meritor is better from some reading I have done. Am looking for one with the dinette setup which will be helpful to do paperwork. Anyways D12 or ISX and why?

I hear the Eaton Ultrashifts are really bad. The only engine option is a Volvo or ISX.

I intentionally bought one with ISX due the fact that the shops I am familiar with had a good know-how with the engine. I wanted it with 13 speed Eaton Fuller as it was what I had used for many years and never failed. Other than that, Volvo fits me the best ergonomically. The only regret, I wish I had bought 770 instead of 670.

Automatic with clutch are fine on pre 2004 models, I have one. 2004 and up ultrashifts are garbage.
All the engines 1998-2007 are good, no matter the brand. The best are Cummins N14 and Detroit series 60 on 98-03 models IMO. Much cheaper parts and better reliability that 2094-2007

Thanks guys. I have been looking around and seems most of these trucks are easily past the million mile mark which has me a little concerned. I love when guys say I had an overhaul done but no paperwork. Who spends that kind of money and doesn't have a receipt for it?

Thanks, I've read enough about the D16 to stay away from that motor.

All I can say is C-13/N14/S60 12.7 (if you want less headaches, you need a good motor). I have only the six weeks experience with pre-emissions manual Volvos in school and while they are comfortable trucks, I wouldn't want to deal with the electrical problems.

If you are dead-set on an automated transmission, you may want to look at newer trucks. Those autos in the early 2000's are garbage (I've heard a lot of bad about them).

If you aren't pulling heavy or tall hills, a good 3.73 rear end and 10 speed should do fine.

i have a 2001 volvo, engine is great, but automatic transmission had to be replaced. cost $$$. The transmission like to freeze up...have to disconnect battery to reset computer.

On the other hand, buddy has same model with manual transmission, and truck is bulletproof.
