Who would've thought it would take more power to turn them airplane gears.

Hmmm, it gets better and better. So, it would have been better to drop it into an overdrive gear and slow way down? Or split lower and rev the nuts off it? Mind, the transmission was in it for 884k miles, so maybe it was indeed on its last legs, seeing as it did that very thing from brand new........

Yes it's amazing because every other direct drive setup runs cooler. In fact some don't need a tranny cooler. Hell even Bruce Mallinson agrees.

This honestly shows how completely ignorant you are on the subject. It doesn't "take more power" to turn one gearset over another. It's kind of a strange statement really.

What gear in what transmission are we talking about?

Any direct gear while climbing mountains. Drop into OD and the temp dropped. Did it for 884k miles as I said, so maybe Eaton Fuller dont know what they are talking about, seeing as they got involved at one point. End result was run it so long as it doesn't get "too" hot, which in their eyes is under 300!
Afraid to say, I totally and utterly disagree with you regards a 2.64 not requiring more power to get turning than a 3.90. More torque is required, as can be proven by a lot of manual tests. Hell even rolling a vehicle on flat ground uses the same principal. Larger tires are easier to get turning by hand than smaller ones, more leverage.
Oh well, no point in rebutting what I say, been there and done that, seen the results. Can it be seen on everyone's precious dyno? No, due to HOW the dyno calculates power.

What gear specifically in what transmission specifically are we talking about?

I didn't say 2.64 were easier then 3.90s. I said 2.64 with a direct drive 10 speed are comparable to 3.55 with an OD 10 speed. And it's absolutely true.

And talking about leverage but not taking into consideration ratios of the transmission is laughable.

No, not really. Look at this way, if you are on a 10spd bicycle and sitting at the bottom of a hill and need to peddle the bike to the top, lets say that 1st gear is the same as a 3.55 ratio, and 10th gear is the same as a 2.64 ratio. Which gear are you going to use to climb that hill?

I would use first gear myself, why you ask? Because I don't want to exert any more force than I have to, to climb the hill. If I use 1st gear (3.55 ratio) I can get to the top without getting hot and being winded. If I use 10th gear (2.64 ratio) I will have to exert a lot more force to climb the same hill, by the time that I get to the top I will be hot and winded.
