I know what you and cowpie and richter are talking about, and I THINK that it is a setup that could be of benefit to someone like cowpie, who stays in the middle of the country were it is FLAT compared to the rest of the country. Yes, I know about the little hills on US20, I've been thru there more times than I can count, I've been in WI, OH, MO etc. and a lot of back roads over there where there are some decent LITTLE hills.
But I don't believe that this is something of benefit to someone who runs primarily east thru the hills and mountains out there, or someone who runs primarily west, or someone like me that runs to one coast or the other almost every week.
Lets face the facts here, since you have all but admitted it anyway. No one with a stock or lightly modified on highway engine is going to be pulling the majority of the hills in the east or west in high gear, regardless of transmission and rears. The gears in a rear differential become extremely valuable when you start to loose your momentum and need to start down shifting the transmission to keep the engine in its peak pulling band. Now, when your transmission (direct) and mine (OD) are both UNDER (below) the direct gear, both transmissions will then be under driving, the truck with the lower ratio rears will then need to use less power to pull the hill at a given speed because its rear gears are easier to turn.

Boys I will never give up because I know I'm absolutely right. You guys are thinking one dimension. You're neglecting the transmission which is a fatal mistake to your argument. It is not just the rear diff that determines startability, gradeability, and top speed. You must include the ratios of the transmission. All that matters is the TOTAL ratio between the input shaft and the axles.

3.55 to 2.64 is 37% different
OD 10 speed to direct 10 speed is 37% different in each gear.
Do you get it yet?
The startability is EXACTLY the same
The gradability is the same
The cruise RPM at 60 mph is the same.
Driver satisfaction is the same.
The wife is happy because now you go on a vacation for a week once a year because of the fuel you saved over an overdrive setup.Richter Thanks this. -

Oscar the KW Thanks this.

So do you guys prefer an 18 speed because of the lower granny gear?
