We all know some trucker are lieing if their lips are moving. A majority of drivers have no idea what there rear end is specked at. Getting answers from guys that try to pass you on the CB isn't at all a controlled experiment and thus the data is not valid.

You can, most will insist you get the high torque rated 18 though.

No, the driver needs to get a shorter rear end. Im guessing your being sarcastic because you just dont get it and think im backwards.

Direct will spin the output the same speed as motor. OD will spin it OVER the speed of the motor. Thus OD spins the shaft faster.

Now, to compensate for a slower shaft in direct, we use a shorter rear. It has nothing to do with changing engine rpm.

    No, I don't think that I am.

For someone that runs primarily flat lands it would get the job done.

    Right.

I don't think the grade ability is worth a hoot when running in areas with big hills.

No, I don't agree. When I first started driving the company that I worked for had 10spds with 3.70's, running the Midwest they got the job done, and weren't that bad to drive, but running out east and west they never seemed to have a gear that was a happy medium, when pulling a big hill it you were always in a gear that was to low or high, there needed to be one in between, the same with going down the hill. I hated those transmissions.

No, because the trans ratio is different. The input to the rear is a different speed for the 2 different trucks, but the trans counteracts that and thus they will both have same engine speed to got the same final speed.

The od truck runs in od, with a 3.55 rear

the direct truck would have a 2.64 rear

You would never spec a 3.64 to run on od or a 3.55 to runin dirrect. You need both to make it work.
