Hello, First.. I have my c.d.l here in Fla..all endorsements but hazmat..and been driving up and down the east coast for a carnival company for about 4 years going on 5.Now we have many trucks in this fleet,350s, straight trucks and a class 7 and now a class 8 with a set of doubles.... and i drive them all at one point or another...we haul special combination trailers ranging from 8k lbs gross to 51k..and average about approx. 25-30k miles a year...long story short,im tired of working for a carnival...low pay and really suxs..
..i wanna work for a decent company..i have been reading a many posts here on several company's and have a pretty good idea of who i am looking at applying to..i do have experience o.t.r but i got out of a truck in 1996..and had 10 years prior to that with 4 company's..but that was then and 3 outta 4 are gone now..but with today's standards they wouldn't count anyways..now with this company I'm with now..as long as i am working here all is good..but if i quit..which i am planning on doing...i am s.o.l and i believe i wont even get much of a reference..if at all,I'm paid under the table and basically a sub contractor..so they don't pay into my taxes..and cripes i basically make less than 10k a year..thus the sux part..
i do understand each company varies slightly in the hiring process, what I'm worried about is my 10 year history..i received my info from hire right..and its basically empty..of everything..no record of anything there..so i guess thats ok..but i am gonna have a tough time showing what the heck Ive been doing for the last 10 years..i know what ive been up to but proving it is a tuff curve..i don't really know how anyone would hire me looking like i do..but if i was to be hired..i do my job..im good at my job..and im reliable and dependable..and importantly responsible.
any thought or ideas to help me..i am a open book and will answer any questions..i tried to do a quick summery but i know how ou folks are as ive been reading here awhiles now..Thanks to all..runamuk
looking to get back over the road..

Okay, first of all, that game where you throw a baseball in a peach basket and it rolls around and then drops out the hole in the bottom, is it true that the game is rigged by putting a weight or something on the back of the basket? If so, you and yours owe me about $3000. I was only 17 and dumb.
The history you have to prove is a Department of Homeland Security deal. Companies are looking at your history to disqualify you from driving for them. There is a 400,000 plus drivers shortage out there. Companies are desperate for drivers. If you can drive and have a CDL you can find a job. When you fill out your applications just don't leave gaps in dates. If you were unemployed put down you were unemployed. Again, they are not trying to embarrass you. They simply have to account for your location. If you were in prison for some of that time put that down. They don't care, they need you. As to what company, go to the local truck stops and see what trucks are there. You want a company that comes through your home area. Florida is not my area of expertise as I have an agreement with an ex girlfriend. She is in Florida and I get the other 49 states.
This is a sellers market for driving skills. Don't sell yourself short. -

i guess whats driving me nuts..and after all the reading ive done in these forums..it all comes down to the point of just telling the truth..thats easy enough, for me..but on paper it looks disgusting..in my view..i never took unemployment or food stamps or any government offerings..when i left California in 07...i went thru hell..its mellowed some i just hate the job im in now..thus the change..and to explain it all is a blurr of serious crap..
im trying to stay away from the bottom of the industry..any ideas on who might be best..england crst jb hunt im sure but dam no way..i remember when jb couldent climb a hill with out crashing..lol..crst told me in the early 90's i was over qualified to work for them..wal mart said the same..i could go on but that was the early 90's..times were way different then.. -

and go forward and i know how to read what is out in front of me and read a map..we didnt have g.ps or computers in the truck back then..i do remember being late once due to weather.. any thoughts..

School is simply to get your CDL card. If you have it, school makes no sense. What you will find is that some companies require recent experience. This is because of insurance regulations. The large starting companies are mostly self insured so that they can take you regardless of your recent experience. They will start you out with low pay and make you go with a trainer. That will be kind of insulting to you as you don't need one but the trainer will see that also. You then can move up. Just get your foot in the door and go from there.
By the way, I was 17 and in the Air Force when I lost that money a the Carnival. I was trying to impress a girl. Turns out, she thought I was an idiot for gambling at a carnival. One more time when a woman knew more about life then I did.Runamukinfl Thanks this. -
There's a few companies that hire with no recent experience and don't require you going to a CDL school. You may have to explain the unemployment or paid under the table though. Apply and call and ask what they require. Stick with a company 6 months & you will be ok for future jobs.

check craigs list in your area, I have sent email to places and they say they will hire me and I have been out of a truck a long time. Just check them out and make sure there where you want to work.

The bottom of the baskets are soaked in water, causing them to warp and making them irregular. If you watch the agent,he will use a ball, but when you play he gives you a different ball.Ask him to use the ball he used!
