Ok so first about me. I'm 22 yr old, single with no children from concord,NC. Been a self employed mechanic and scrap hauler since i was 17. Drove a f450 super duty roll-back pretty much all day every day for the past 2 years scraping cars and buying vehicles to part out. Loved and wanted to drive a truck since about 8 years old. Not in it for the money in it for the love of trucking but the money is an added bonus. No problem being away from home for weeks or months. Have a clean criminal record and no accident or dui's.

The bad. No real legal employment history. 2 seat belt tickets in the past 5 years.

My goal. Looking to go get my class A CDL permit and go to Davidson county community college for the 8 week 384 hr truck driver training program. After that I would like to get on with Watkins & Shepard due to the fact you are a name and not just an number there, and they treat there drivers fair. Read over American truckers thread about his experience with them and sounds like the kind of company I'm willing to bust my tail for. That would be my first choice but if not id like to get on with another smallish company.

The questions. For the general knowledge written test is that just a test on the entire book, or is it on things such as safety? Im gonna look over the hand book and take some practice test but just wanted to know some of the things that i may need to know such as no less than 4/32 tread on steers and such.

Thanks for any help in advanced any advice is greatly appreciated. Keep the greasy side down

Seems like you have a trucking company picked out. Why don't you talk to them and see what they will except and what is a no go. You might change your mind if you have to go with one of the starter companies and you are not willing to make that sacrifce.

    NCdirtracer Thanks this.

Thanks for the reply. I plan on talking with them before I start school to see what all they have to say. Just wanted some opinions on the subject and maybe some people experience with the school and or W/S

The General Knowledge test like you were asking about. It is not like your regular "Car" written test.. Yes, it is more "Safety" than anything..... good luck... and from what I heard W&S is a good place to go... Good Luck...

Thanks for the reply Koolkid. Yeah the school website says to study the safety sections for the general knowledge so I didn't know if I needed to know more.

There are also many different sites that you can check out that have the tests or pre-tests on them. Should be #### close to the real one you are going to take if not the same.

Maybe "pm" AmericanTrucker and he can give you the ins and outs of Watkins. They don't do any kind of training but you seem to have a little background so this may help. If you are not comfortable with that though I recommend you don't do it. Some people can and others can't. A.T. had a good trucking background and seem to pick it up pretty good. I think Walstib did too.

You definitely seem to be in the right position in life to be an over the road trucker. Sounds as if you kind of know what to expect so there won't be too many surprises. Wish you the best man, and like I said get ahold of American Trucker or Walstib, those guys are great and am sure they will help guide you at Watkins.

Just wanted to add, I just noticed your age so make sure you tell A.T. you are only 22. Most companies are hiring at 23 years old so make sure you find out before going to far. This will probably be your only minor hurdle. I think the seat belt crap won't be a factor.

Don't make a life decision on one source. Check as many as you can. Also have a plan B in place just in case. You should make a list of wants and goals. Write down what you want out of a company and find one close to it. Next write down where you want to be in 5,10 years from the start and how you are going to get there. On your want list be sure to include benefits. Do you want to be an millionare when you retire? It can be done with some planning. I came just a tad short of it. What kind of truck and product do you want to haul for a living? General freight is everyone's choice but I believe specialized hauling is better, for me anyway. It's better to have far too much information than handly any.

For the OP and everyone else, what kind of plan did you have to achieve close to 1mil at retirement. I would like to get some info from an experienced professional on that. Thanks

Save as much as you can, and then save some more.
