hey i'm obviously new to the forum. i'm 22, i have a class B cdl and have been driving locally for around 4 years now, i've decided i want to go out on the road, i love being behind the wheel its the best feeling. this winter i will be getting a class A license and i want to hit the road, but i'm not sure exactly how to break into, i have been debating on owner operator type jobs or just going straight to work for someone else, maybe finding a local job where i am home every night. the ultimate goal for me is to own my own truck and be home every night or so but thats down the road... no pun intended haha.
looking to get into trucking, owner operator maybe?

If you truely want to be a O/O, then I would advise driving for someone else first to get experience... Then after a year, or two, or 3... You will have a better feel for OTR trucking & if you want to take the finacial risk of being a O/O

Plus for the most part it is hard period to be home every night and make money. I would think you need to be running a little harder or being gone more to put in the miles to make money. Just my 2 cents though.

well my ultimate goal is to be a free lance trucker ( i think thats the right terminology ), mostly pick and choose when i work, possibly contract with excavation companies and haul dirt? i dont know, i didnt know what i was doing 2 years ago. but thats the goal at least... is that feasible in 10 years? maybe, maybe not. i dont know, but when and if i start a family i dont want to be gone for 2 weeks at a time. i grew up in a home where family was nothing, my father wasnt around, my mother worked non stop and rightfully so. i dont want kids i have to go threw that. but right now its just me and my dog and i want to see the country and want to make the most money possible doing it lol

No, that is not a freelance trucker! Your speaking of an Independent Operator. You will need your own authority, truck, trailer, insurance, & contacts!
-
what is a freelance trucker then?
-
I've never heard that term before concerning this industry.

Depending on how soon you are looking to start a family. Just try and remember that more than likely for the 1st two years you would be OTR with Very Little home time for the most part. oh, well i've heard it used that way and other guys i know that drive trucks do. either way doesnt matter to me... right now i'm young i want to make the most money i can and see the country. thats why i was interested in owner operator, it pays much more then working just driving for someone but is the cost of maintenance and headache worth it?

I'm guessing that your ultimate goal is to become a true independent. That is where you find the freight, you haul the freight, you send out the billing invoices, you get paid all the money off those invoices, & when you get screwed.... You take it in the shorts!
