Okay just looking for a little advice here. I am a former driver and have been out of the industry about 10 years now. I began my career with Swift Transportation and drove for them about 8 or 9 months. At the time I made a stupid decision and quit no notice while leaving the terminal for home time. Immediately after I went to work with a regional company that delivered to local food service establishments. I worked there maybe a month or 2 then left the industry all together.

Since this time I have maintained steady employment with long term jobs, 2 jobs in the last 10 years. Over the last year or so I have been strongly considering getting back into driving. I just miss it in a way if that makes sense. I am more grown and mature now and really am sure I want to do this.

My question would be, how would I go about getting back into the industry. CDL school is so expensive and I can't exactly afford it right now. I don't want to just leave my job unless I am sure I have employment lined up. Should I maybe try to go back with Swift? Is it even possible? I do know they own their own driving schools. I liked driving for them in all honesty and they kept me busy with decent miles. Also I no longer have my CDL I did let it go. Is a refresher course possible? Any other possible companies? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help and I may have more questions to follow.

Forget Swift; the training is excellent, no question about that, but they're installing in cab driver facing cameras and other monitoring devices, ie, big brother is watching.

Apply for companies that have their own refresher course or CDL training program. Lodging & meals provided. There's several that don't require any cash except for the CDL permit and then hard copy CDL at the end of training.

CTL Transportation - CDL school for hazmat/tankers.
Milan Express in Jackson, TN.(don't know if they're a good company or not)
RE West in Lebanon, TN - no contract to sign. Driver unload or assist unloading. Mostly hot water heaters from AO Smith in Ashland City.

    Earl Henderson Trucking
    Wil-Trans
    Maverick Transportation
    Celadon - refrigerated or flatbed
Millis Transfer - $500.00 for tuition

What city are you near in Tennessee? Prime Inc. has a dedicated account with Walmart in Shelbyville if you live close enough. I wouldn't do their regular OTR because the trucks are too slow and small, plus a couple of their drivers that post on here have bashed me in the past.

Scroll to the top of this page and click on "CDL Practice Tests" to get started.

Wow I never knew Swift was beginning to do that. Kind of scary. I am not sure I would be to comfortable with that.

Thank you a lot for all the valuable information, you have been a huge help. I will definitely take a look at some of the different companies you suggested, especially the refresher course. I am currently re-studying the CDL manual and taking a lot of the practice tests. I may go ahead and get the permit once I am comfortable with the written exam again.

The good thing is I have time on my side as I currently have a job, and am not in too much of a rush to jump right back in until all my research is done. As far as Prime I actually live about 20 minutes from Shelbyville so that may be an option also worth looking into.

You may also want to get a loan or grant to pay for CDL training at either a community college or a reputable private CDL school. This way you are NOT obligated any individual trucking company to pay off their "loan", had the trucking company been the one that trained you.

    Good luck to you!

God bless you and your family! God bless the U.S.A.!

I'll play the " good cop & bad cop" with you on this one. What makes you think that trucking will be any better this time around? You quit 2 companies in 1 year for some reason or other.....right? I would need to know what was going on between your ears before offering advice. The new rules suck. Traffic is even worse. Truck stops are still ghetto's. Shippers and receivers still hate you. Dispatchers are still a coin toss on whether you get a decent one, or some dirt bag who only looks out for his production bonus.

But with that said...............come on in! The water is great!!!!!!

CTL is one of the many divisions of Comcar.
Not a company that I would run for, but some of the drivers I have talked to seem fairly happy. They have a good bit of home every day, or week, bulk tank stuff.

CC, CCC, CTL, WSE, MCT. Are all Comcar company's. CTL is actually has it's HQ in Mulberry FL still I believe, hauling fertilizer.

Thanks for the advice, I will check them out for sure. The camera isn't a deal breaker it would just take some getting used to.

Good question. I was much younger and stupider at the time. I had some issues at home which are no longer relevant and needed to be home a whole lot more than I was able to get home. Also I had a friend that is in my current career field make me a decent job offer and I wanted to jump on board. A lot of time has passed since then. Basically this isn't a spur of the moment decision I have been thinking this over for at least a year now. I am in no hurry to get back into it as I want to research and make the most informed decision. So a time frame for me is maybe 3-6 months from now and maybe longer.

Thanks for the info I will follow up on these as well.

WSE and MCT have merged; now it's just MCT. Coast to coast refrigerated.
CCC is dry bulk and CTL is liquid. CTL would be great for hazmat tanker OTR. With a year experience in tankers, then move to A&R Logistics hauling non-hazmat dry bulk. My former neighbor makes $72K working for A&R Logistics hauling out of the Nashville railhead; check the website.

Yes, I'm a born and raised Tennessean that immigrated to Las Vegas area couple of years ago.
