It's very tight to make a profit if hiring a driver and have a truck and trailer payment with a small operation.Im seeing a lot of loads under $2 a mile.I don't start my truck unless it's $1000 a day minimum.Flatbed work.

Imports are down maybe 20-30% and the market is still over-filled with people and equipment that rushed in during the Covid/Supply Chain Disruption years. Freight rates are very low and there are too many trucks/trailers desperate to get any load for income. However desperate you are there are 50 drivers/companies doing less maintenance and living cheaper than you and that will move that freight for less than you. It's best to find direct customers and become their Superman so you are NOT just scratching out a living from load boards, which have 5-10 times as many loads posted as actually need to be moved.

    You are kidding?

You are working on a thin margin for super cheap freight and are to deal with higher costs to keep up on the authority's insurance requirements.

The best thing is to investigate expedite companies like Panther, Load-1 and Land Star.

What courier company were you working for between detroit and Chicago? Was it based in Detroit?

Yes, you can do it on paper. There are many free calculators so just put all of your numbers together to get a really good estimate of your per mile operating expense. Then search the load boards to see what's available in your area above your number.

Then see what load is available on the other end of that high paying load. Rinse and repeat until everything adds up to happy well paid driver and 3k for you monthly.

Look forward to seeing it work out for you.

Hey, would you mind sharing where you find those numbers for the imports and the too many carriers and the loads on load boards posted?

    Rideandrepair Thanks this.

You need to accept that the hired driver will gain more money from your equipment than you do. The better your driver the more he gets to stay it’s just business. Now as a rough rule but it’s usually close or has been for us for many years. You can figure a 1/3 for the driver, a 1/3 for fuel, and a 1/3 for the truck. Now yours comes out of the trucks 1/3 after payments, insurance, break downs, etc.

A very fuel efficient truck will off set that break down a bit, but not enough to give you satisfaction
