I have done some home work. Read some forum posts, and I know that this may have been asked before. But I could not find anything. So here goes:

    First:
I have done some ride alongs with a friend. Enjoyed it a good deal, few family ties, and no real home of my own. So, I have decided that I should make the step into trucking, while it wont always be ideal, and I wont always like it. I enjoy driving, I enjoy travel, I enjoyed my ride along, the pay is good and its also my 'home' as well. (I didn't enjoy the mud butt, but...from what im told its my diet :p)

My question is, the cost of a CDL is extream, the driving school, and fees and all of that. I am looking for a company that will put me in a truck in exchange for driving for them for a year or more.

Now I know what some of you will say "This company sucks" "that company sucks" etc, everyone has their favorites and least favorites. And I know for a fact, odds of a company putting me in a truck and taking the fees out of my paychecks or paying it upfront or some such will make pretty #### sure im worked like a dog for the first year or so, and I accept that, its the price ya gotta pay to get what you want in life.

So I am wondering if any of you vets or even newbies can tell me what companys will put me in a truck with little to no out of pocket expence to me. I looked into Crete and they require I pay everything, werner is not hireing new drivers, England has taken a week and not gotten back to me, schniders website is a pain to navigate and I cant find any of their standards, but what I found indicates that I have to pay.

    Any help would be apprecated.

Yes, you are going to get a lot of different opinions which usually come from ones personal experience. You can also make some pretty good assumptions for yourself by researching some of these companies. My wife and I drove for Central Refrigerated and had a very good experience there. They went above and beyond to help us in many situations. Central has above average pay and really nice new equipment. Their terminal in Salt Lake, Ut is pretty impressive! I believe they have a little terminal and school right there in NY. It is fairly new, because I have not been there. They have other terminals in GA, CA, CO and TX too. Check out there website. Any questions you have you have come to the right place to ask! Welcome to the forum and good luck!

Sadly they require 3 years of verifiable employment. Due to economy and family problems (and some school) in the last three years I have only worked about 3 months. Prior to that I had 3 years security experiance.

Central has a terminal right outside of Denver (Henderson, Co) It is a small however and there is no training there. Will be great for when you come into town though. You will have to go to Salt Lake for school and orientation. They pay for a bus ticket to get you out there. You can also put the money toward a plane ticket or possible hitch a ride with another driver.

I start Centrals school next week. Some things I can tell you...

You will need $245 out of pocket to get into their program. It might be cheaper for you as $145 of it for me is the licensing fees. $100 is for registration.

They will provide you the bus ticket to get there as well as your room. Meals are all on you. My school is 4 weeks but its not part of Central in the NY school its actually someone they use to train and pay them. Your school will probably be 3 weeks. You will then do orientation for 3 days and then get on a truck with a mentor. Your pay will start once you are with your mentor. So you will need enough money to get through school and until your first check. Figure about 5 weeks of paying for your own food and laundry and anything else you want. I think they might have advances once you start with a mentor but thats still like 4 weeks away.

The other thing I can tell you is that if you apply with them then dont wait for them to call you. Call and talk to a recruiter first. He/She will give you a link to their app page. Fill out the app and call them right back. I can say that this is the biggest pain in the butt part so far. Its almost impossible to get a hold of your recruiter, atleast it was for me. Dont leave a message on their voicemail as more often then not they will not call you back. Just keep calling until you get through to them. One day I called every 2 minutes like 20 times before I got a hold of my recruiter.

As for your work history... They do want the last 3 years. I think if you can provide documentation... like certified letters stating you were in school or something and not just a bum... you will be ok. You would have to talk to your recruiter about that.

You can have no felonies, no dwi/dui's, no current problems on your DVR.

Ive done alot of research, and while I cannot tell you first hand about the company because I dont start until next week.... alot of people on the forums have said that Central is decent and probably one of the better starting companies out there.

    Good Luck =)

Well england called, turned me down. How sad is that? Apparently with the fact that last 3 years been hard for 'verifiable jobs' for me they wont touch me.

Be glad. From what I hear you do not want to go with England anyhow. Try Central or Swift and talk to a recruiter. Explain in detail why you were not working. Dont let them cut you off while just telling you no. Explain it throuroughly to them. My recruiter tried to cut me off and tell me no because I was discharged from my last job. She was ready to hang up and as soon as I explained the situation and told her I was on unemployment I was approved.

Doesnt hurt to keep trying. The worst that could happen is they tell you no... well in Englands case I think you made out lol.

Applied for swift, (I think) and central already, and I am not on unemployment, I haven't ever taken such things.

But I am hoping that things work out otherwise I get to stay in a king soopers bakery for the next 3 years.
