Seems I have exhausted all options, I called PGT and McElroy today and PGT isn't hiring out of my area and McElroy wants a refresher or experience. At this point I'm open to dry van, flatbed, or reefer, although reefer isn't my first choice. Maverick, as I said in my last post is all automatic which isn't something I'm thrilled about. Stevens wants me to go through their whole 3 weeks of school, not just a refresher. So unless y'all know of anyone else, maybe a smaller company that will take me, then it looks like I may have to make Swift work for 6 months because of my situation.
Looks like Swift or Maverick for me...

I'd go Maverick, nothing wrong with an auto. I've test driven new trucks with autos and liked them.

Keep looking around I'm sure you will find something don't give up and settle.

I do not hear many bad things at all about Maverick. When I was out on the road the first time all of the drivers I spoke with enjoyed there time there. I am going to Swift for reasons like yours. I have been off the road since July. If I could have gotten on I would probably have gone with Maverick but the Swift job has it's upside for me. I live very close to the Greer terminal and they have a dedicated run from Greer to High Point NC I hear from current drivers. In time I will try to get on it and evaluate my situation in a year or so.

I haven't seen many bad things about Maverick on here and the times I have talked to their drivers they seemed happy. Maverick certainly pays more and the home time is good. I just have this hang up about automatic transmission on their trucks, I haven't read many good things about automatic and I prefer manual, but in position I realize beggars can't be choosers. Little Rock is only about 5 hours from me which isn't too bad and their training pay is excellent. Swift terminal is only about 3 hrs from me, but Swift scares me a little bit and their pay is rather low, but if their drivers are really getting close to 3,000 miles a week then I wouldn't do too bad in the first year. I don't know, but I am going to have to make a decision here soon. -
Automatics are just labor saving devices. If you are against labor saving devices, then I say, you are Anti-American. Do you think I got a body like this from working hard. No. I try to avoid hard labor at all times. Have you ever seen a woman in Labor. Ask her if she would like an easier way to give birth. I am sure her answer will be yes.
If you know how to drive a manual then there is no reason not to drive an automatic. I would not be surprised if in 4 or 5 years, automatics will be the majority. -
Are going to drive a truck to stoke your ego or put money in your pocket? Youre thinking with your ego if you pick Swift over Maverick because of the type of transmission they use. The first time you are stuck in a traffic jam youll be glad to have an automatic or wish you did have one.
Newer tuck automatics are not like a cars automatic at all, they are just automatically shifted versions of manual transmissions. You can override them and place it in whatever gear you want at any time. Some drivers always manually shift their automatics. I cant think of more silly reason for picking a poor company with poor pay over a good one like Maverick then the type of transmission they have.Regulars Thanks this. -

I have an automatic it stays in manual 99 percent of the time. All I do is push buttons. Up shift or down shift. Sometimes it doesn't want to shift so it beeps at you. I did have 1 time going down a mountain grade it didn't let me shift into the gear I wanted. Scared the crap out of me, but of course made it down. From the threads on here the maverick miles seem to be down. So high mileage pay is useless with no miles. I also doubt swift drivers in those slow trucks are doing 3,000 a week on a regular basis as well.
Oh by the way I doubt you will fall in love with it. I can't wait to get a stick again, but this automatic will do for now. Mine won't let you start off in anything but 3rd. Most of the time it tries to start off in second even when your empty. Takes forever to get into the big hole, but once she is there she is good to go. (Eaton I shift) -
I could also try KLLM, they would take me, but from what I read on here I think I'd rather go with Swift or Maverick... I was wondering about the mileage, the recruiter at Maverick told me between 2200-2600 a week on a regional account, but I know how recruiters can be. As far as automatic or standard, maybe it's because the last time I did drive of course was a standard and I really enjoyed it so I don't want to do anything else, but I can't make a decision on a company based on rather I like the transmission or not. I know those automatics can switch to manual, but it's not the same without the stick.
