Looks like that car was going pretty fast when he hit the truck.

Not all highways have a shoulder to pull over on.
So now you’re saying it’s best to be completely stopped on the roadway instead of slowly progressing toward a pull off area.

You realize that this wasn't on an interstate?

Either way, hitting the grass is my last resort. I'll hit an asphalt or gravel shoulder without hesitation, though.

Extra points if the car driver was watching the chase scene from The Seven Ups when they hit.

I hate sitting on the shoulder and hate drivers who do it unless they have no choice. Have limped through snowstorm for miles to get a derated rig off the highway.

Sure, but it wasn't on an interstate and the shoulder isn't big enough for anything other than a 2 wheeler.
    Google Maps

Evidence at the scene and witness interviews indicate that at about 1:12 a.m., Artis Tilley, 49, of Jacksonville, was driving a 2012 Freightliner tractor with a white box trailer eastbound on U.S. 17/92 just east of Fletcher Cut Off Road in the outside right lane at a slow speed with his hazard lights on due to a mechanical issue with the tractor-trailer, according to a news release from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. Thomas Rivera Jr., of Haines City, was also in the right lane, driving a 2004 Ford Focus on the four-lane road at highway speeds, PCSO spokesman Scott Wilder said.

It was dark, with limited lighting from nearby businesses to help illuminate the roadway, when Rivera’s Ford approached Tilley’s tractor-trailer, Wilder said.

It appears that Rivera didn’t see the semi and ran into the back of the vehicle — traveling about six feet under the trailer...

Tilley’s license had been suspended Oct. 1 for failure to pay child support, Wilder said, but Tilley told deputies he didn’t know that...

Sitting duck is the term they used to refer to those idiots who park on the side of the highway for no good reason. I felt it was an apt description, so I adopted it myself

Obvviously if theres no shoulder then use common sense and do wat u gotta do.. But my original post was more talking about the morons driving 40mph on the interstate with their 4 ways on for no apparent reason....

    How about this.
If there’s a shoulder to pull off onto, then you’re required to pull off if you can’t maintain a minimum speed. If you don’t, you get cited.
If there’s no shoulder then continue until you reach a safe location to pull off the roadway

Doing 45 in 65 or 70 mph area is just asking for trouble regardless of why your going slow. Some yahoo not paying attention is just as likely to not see the slow vehicle, as he is to not see a "sitting duck" on the shoulder. I just like the term...sitting duck.

I'ma guess there is no right way to handle it if your broken down. ###### if you do, ###### if you don't. Stay on the shoulder someone will #####, attempt to limp to the next exit, rest area, etc...someone will #####. What's that old saying..."everyone is a critic" or something along those lines.

One thing is for sure...no matter what you do...someone will #####. ;)
