I have a lose steering column on my 2002 Freightliner FL112. I have narrowed the "wiggle" down to the area I highlighted on the parts diagram breakdown. I am not a mechanic so i apologize for not using proper terms. It is where the splines and bearing(?) unison. How can i rig something up to make this tighter? I have a welder and some free time. I do not want to disassemble the steering column as I am told it would be a nightmare to reassemble. I also have a cutting wheel (as that is how i exposed the part to begin with). Any advice would be really appreciated regarding what i can do next.

hope i am saying this properly but the slip appears to be coming from where the bearing and the shaft/u joint assembly attach. I have no information regarding how this works, or what i should cut/weld/tighten/ or unscrew.

When the steering wheel is used as a crutch and pushed down on hard by a heavier person , like standing up to get to the sleeper, it can cause some damage to the whole assembly. Take this to the nearest shop if it can be done safely or if not have it towed, It is not just your life out there.

When your first go to is a cutoff wheel to remove dash panels and a welder as a substitute for new parts I am a little concerned with how this might end up. The parts you have circled look to be a spline that is probably wore out. With the attitude and skills displayed above, might as well weld the column solid and blow past those lazy truckers into the nearest guard rail, while laughing about how much money you saved by preforming the repair yourself.

Lol go to a mechanic....LOL .. the mechanic is the one who failed to diagnose this problem in the first place!! I hold a masters degree, a pilots liscense, all my cdl endorsements, own a fleet of 5 trucks, im pretty #### sure i can figure out how to make two pieces of metal tight with some simple guidance instead of your ####### opinion and judgement.

If you have preformed "endless repairs" how is this kicking your butt? Fairly simple problem for a competent individual.
