Can anyone tell me is there any way to tighten up a 5th wheel. The kin pin slides back and forward while hooked to the truck. I guess maybe an inch or two play.

DOT says 1/2" max play.
Most have an adjustment nut you can tighten but at some point, especially with age
you need to have it rebuilt. -
Yes it does have an adjustment. But chances are you are pulling an older trailer and the pin is worn too.
-
I'm pulling a 96 tanker so yes it is pretty old. Every now and then I'll switch trls. and pull a newer one. And it does the same thing although not as bad. Is the adjusting something I can do myself or will I need a mechanic to do it.

Depends on the make and model, but most have a bolt and nut coming out of the front of the base plate. I was in the same boat about two years ago, it got annoying as hell, so I had it rebuilt, to be honest I think you are just as well off to just replace the whole base plate.
I found a big truck wrecking yard not far from me that sells a complete late model 5th assm, for 200.00
Just my take on it. -
I have a Volvo 780. It doesn't have that bolt on the front of it. We do have a truck wreck yard here. I think I'll check them out.

If you go that route just make sure it's of a late model (within a year or two) of being new. JMHO

My Holland has the 13/16" adj nut inside the throat and you don't want to get it too tight!
That must be fun yanking a tanker with all that slop! -
LOL, that's what I was thinking, you would feel like one of those shake weights.
