1996 Series 60 in a 2015 389 Glider with injectors which are larger than OEM (been in the motor since glider was new) and my last oil sample came back with fuel dilution in the oil. I put the rig in a Detroit repair shop that has done all my engine work the last 8+ years. The injectors were good but they adjusted them and I had the overhead run. I run the same loads on the same routes all the time and having driven this truck 660,000 miles I am very familiar with how this truck pulls. The day after I got it out of the shop in the hills I had to drop an extra gear pulling the hills and seem to have less throttle response loaded pulling the hills. I was curious if the injectors were set wrong where they aren’t allowing enough flow, the overhead wasn’t run correctly or now that the injectors are set correctly I won’t have as much throttle. I looked back at my previous oil samples and I have had fuel dilution in the past, but not enough to be critical.
Loss of power after injectors adjusted and overhead run

Go back to the shop and have them hookup to the ecm see if there is any tell tail signs. If there is nothing, have them reset the ECM to delete the adaptive "learnt" running characteristics. It may just think it's supposed to be like that. Other than that they may have fA<ked up too.

Well, if they did nothing but the overhead...
How did they "check" the injectors?
Overhead adjustment on 60's is critical, have they run it for you before? Also, if they had any boost hoses off you could have a boost leak.
Fuel dillution is caused for the most part from injector solenoids. The injectors aren't removed to inspect. Usually fuel dye is used, then the engine ran, and valve cover removed to look for the dye.
I've seen some places use air pressure.Last edited: May 26, 2024

Your supposed to have the engine set in two particular places when you do the adjustment, so there is that. And the measurement is done by feeler gauge or a specific height of the spring on the injector with slight pressure to the plunger/spring portion of the injector.

When I said “the injectors were good” I implied that they checked them. Sorry for the confusion I will elaborate, they checked them and then set them to correct Detroit specs.

Rideandrepair and Big Road Skateboard Thank this. -
Cylinder contribution tests or other automated tests on the laptop or scanner will tell you (not always right).
