Money in tankers around here is less than dry van freight, and way less than expediting. There is money in tankers if you haul for a private outfit and normally one product that has regular accounts.

I can't agree with that enough. The 1099 outfits have saturated the HELL out of my area. Haven't talked to a single one that was worth a ####. I know there are some out there that are halfway decent, but 9 times out of 10, it's not a good scenario.

    A grand?

Price out what it costs to repair/replace things in a truck. Engine, turbos, exhaust, axles, carriers, brake drums, shoes, slack adjuster bushings, ECM/Electronics, Air compressor, cracked head, 5th wheel, axles, drive line,.. etc etc etc.

Then add in the labor costs,.. how many weeks will it take to save up for 1 repair?

I strongly suggest you do some research. Driving is the easy part. The only way for the truck make money is for the wheels to keep rolling. The only way they keep rolling is to keep it well maintained and prevent problems from happening when you need the truck to be reliable.

Ask any O/O here worth his salt,.. the majority of our down time is spent making sure the truck is ready to roll back out and make more money just so we can put it back into the truck to make more money.

If you know a better way,.. hey,.. go refinance your home and buy a truck. Lots of rich truckers out here.

I agree with everything you say but this I don't. The risk is also with the company, they can face a lot of liabilities from the behavior of one bad owner.

The skimming profits thing makes them look like they are the bad guy, when it isn't the owner's customer and the back office stuff thanks to regulations cost money and time, so skimming?

    Not really.

If you are somewhat mechanical and enjoy working on your truck on Saturday being an O/O is the way to go. You will either make good money or you will go so deep in the hole it will take years to get back out. Being a good money manager is most important. I know guys who would give anything to have never bought a truck and I know others who love it. Its worked well for me
