I can't say one way or the other because I don't know if they did or not. But, I will relay that to them.

Now ya got me wondering if that new head has an issue.

I feel for ya, I'm the same guy. I use the same independent mechanic I have for the last 10 years. He cuts counterbores for many other shops in a 200 mile radius, and I've watched him work over the years. He is surgeon general serious when doing an inframe or a transmission rebuild, takes it very seriously. His name is on the line. @wore out has used his services I believe.

Thing I like about him is that he will back up his f-ups. If it left his shop and fails, anything from the tow, to repair, replacement, or re do. I'm certainly not his biggest customer, but I've stuck with him because of his integrity. He chose to eat $4k on injectors, because FL supplied the wrong ones, and his mechanic didn't check the numbers before installing, and FL wouldn't honor their mistake after 10 months. Maybe the reason he is down to just himself from a 5 man shop. But he did the right thing by me.

PDI I believe is the name for the aftermarket kit that you and @lester were referencing. McBee is another one that comes to mind.

The camshaft was mentioned. If the lobes were inspected and not scored or damaged, there would be no reason to remove, but camshaft bearings would not be replaced either.

When you said 'cracked liner' - why not just replace that cylinder pack? Was it up for an inframe?

How many miles are on the engine - when was last rebuild?

It'd be great to have 8-10 guys on here looking over the shoulder of your mechanic as he diagnoses and gets to the root of the problem, one of the reasons I like this forum.

@sawmill hasn't weighed in, I think he's had some experience with this engine too.

Anyway - you've mentioned a couple of times that the lack of cashflow is becoming a burden, hate to hear that. 7 weeks - is a long time to be unexpectedly down. Most shops could have this in and out the door within 2 weeks at most, even with parts availability issues.

It turns out they installed the wrong mains. The supplier they use typically has their bearings marked with the same numbers CAT uses. Some way or another, they received the wrong ones. They checked the thickness on both and they were the same. But the overall diameter ended up being off just enough to let oil blow through the end gaps. They concocted a way to mount an air line to the engine and blew air through it til they found the leak.

Ole Red sounds better than it has since I bought it and holds 60ish PSI going down the road now. And without any temperature issues yet. Haven't put a load on it though.

I'd be wanting answers as to why they said clearance was fine when they checked it.

Did they even plastigauge the mains during the original overhaul?
