First off you need to take it to a shop. They need to go through the low oil press tree. They will measure oil press before and after the filter. I would say your most likely failure is the sensor, we have changed many of them. If your filters are truly plugging most likely your injector timing is retarded. This is a major issue that Cummins just figured out in the last year or so. To check injection static timing takes about 4-5 hours depending on chassis. If it is bad it will take 8 or so additional hours to fix depending on chassis. This is a major issue on CM871 07-10 engines (egr&dpf no DEF). This issue also gives you poor throttle response, poor fuel milage, plugged dpfs, and more.
Also to inframe a ISX cost $35,000? guess our shop needs to charge more normally a basic ISX inframe runs around $15,000 even less if you reuse the head which most of the time you can.

Could another possibility be fuel in the oil?
-
Enough fuel to cause low oil press warning light and codes would be very noticable on the dipstick. Most likely the oil filter is plugged or the sensor is bad. I found another plugged filter today.

Hello, It is not a issue of cam gears slipping. If you are familuar with Isx timming you know the injection timming is set using a wedge and proceedure to line the crank to the cam using a tapered cam gear. What it comes down to is it is not exact enough for these engines. If your wedges are worn, parts machined slighlty diffrent, or don't follow the proceedure completely the timming will be off and most of the time its retarded. Cummins now has a tool to measure static timming just the same as we used to do with a N14 to set rocker box shims. Cummins has relised 4.25, 4.5, and 4.75 wedges to advance the timming as needed. As of right now all the CM871 ISX problem engines ( plugged oil fiters, plugged dpf and doc, low power/sluggish) I have measured static timming on have been retarded. If you have access to Cummins quickserve you can look up static timing specks by engine CPL. Also the proceedure is listed under injector static timming.
country29 Thanks this. -
Country29, is this a problem with the donaldson filter only? And are there any differences in the micron size on these filters? I'm wondering if other manufacturers engines are seeing the same issues, just not as bad? Seems to me from what I have been learning, that this extra soot in these EGR engines is causing a whole lot more problems then has been let on before. Thanks for the info.

Sorry for the delayed response, If you have access to Quickserve here is the link to the proccedure. https://quickserve.cummins.com/qs2/pubsys2/xml/en/procedures/10/10-006-025.html If you do not have access the tools needed are 3824942 and 2892426. The proceedure is very much the same as shimming cam follower boxs on a N14 for injection timming. Just you use diffrent wedges instead of shims.
