the reality is.. and theres been 20 trucking companies/brokers there before you beating down their door and phone lines... finding a customer that has the ability to handle a 1 man show, but has enough freight to keep you consistently busy, and is going to pay the rate you want, and pay their bills on time..and doesnt have a broker involved.. is like finding a needle in a haystack.. actually the needle maybe easier to find..i have burned down so many doors made so many phone calls. endless emails... there is not much problems a 1 man show can solve. thats just the reality...
the problems you can solve are usually not worth the time and effort or the amount of money you quote is to high..its just the reality of it... a 1 man show is going to have better luck building relationships with brokers and proving your value to them and leave them to do the job of finding the customers... this is what i have focused on and cant say it has worked or it hasnt.. but even in the 1.5 years ive had my authority i have found 1 broker that is top notch and will call me with loads on a regular basis and will pay what i quote them even in this market and even if i quote way above market price.. they are always willing to negtiate and they are great to work with.. for me this has been the best approach.. anybodys experience may vary.. it also depends what trailer you run and what area of the country you are in... going direct i dont think is the best option for everybody. maybe if you are trying to build a fleet, that is a good approach. but not everybody wants to own a fleet..
i am just sharing my first hand experience.. not saying somebody else could have a 180 degree different experience... the best thing any 1 man show can do, is figure out where your value is at. what freight problems you like to solve and build your reputation around that, and try to understand what its worth monetarilym compared to the market... the one advantage a small guy has over a fleet is they can manuever and adapt on the fly much faster, and provide much better service than your run of the mill fleet driver... finding the customers that value that is important.. then trying to get everything else figured out is a part of it.. there is most likely something to be sacrificed.. either money, time, or type of equipment..everybody has different personalities and people they like to work with... good business men always figure it out.
Low rates and no profits: Everyone’s crying.
