Some terminals offer he CDL training progam and apart of that training is to work the dock and go to class. The upside is that you get paid the going rate for dock hands and get the training for free (so long as you complete a pre-determined amount of employment once your driving). The downside is it's like 14 hour days everyday. Not allterminals have the CDL school thing. I know the guys that run one at the terminal in Columbus OH and the students really are being successful. I don't know if Gary offers the class, not all barns do.

XFM2013, thanks so much for the confirmation, much appreciated! If you work 24 hours a day, would you get paid for all 14 - maybe times and a half after 40? Do you think it would be wise to call the various terminals to inquire about whether they offer the driver training program? I think it might be the fastest way

Time and half after 8 hr/daily. The barns that do not offer the driver training typically just send driver candidates to the terminals that offer the class. Usually the closet barn, and Con-Way usually foots the lodging bill, etc....

I currently work for dayton freight and I can honestly say I'll most likely retire here. It's worth a look.

Thanks so much for the response, I appreciate it. I moved to Indy and do you know whether Dayton has a dock to driver program? What would you recommend to someone looking to break into the industry. ..pay for your CDL or go with a company that will pay for it?

I would definitely NOT recommend paying. We do have that program at dayton but you have to be a part time dock worker first. I would call the local tm and ask. I've heard fed ex freight has that program and their pay is very comparable to ours. You're definitely looking in the right area to get started. You'll be making excellent money at most ltl companys

Thank you so much, I am totally willing to work the dock. In fact, I am quite excited about it. Would you advice that I make my interest in a driving position known when applying for a dock work job? Or just apply for a dock worker position and take it from there?

I would absolutely make it known. Dock workers usually make really good money also.
