Are those the guys that pull the doubles down the road?

are they basically owner operators with their on trucks on a contract or how does that work exactly?

Senior company drivers at UPS and FedEx can make 100k or more a year.

Yes they pull doubles and triples doing relays meeting drivers from other terminals where they switch loads with and head back to there home terminal.

No... I worked at Conway freight for only 3 months therefor had the shortest runs... Mainly worked the dock... Out of 14 hours I would drive maybe 4... Of course just starting out your paid the low end of the companies scale both per mile and per hour... Most companies take 3 years till you hit full pay scale... The drivers at my terminal making 100k a year had 10-15 years in the company.... Had the best and longest bids and pretty much never worked the dock... My checks for the short 3 months NET would be 850-950

I've turn down 4 jobs in the last 2 weeks that pay 12k/mo. The jobs are there, it's who you know and a reputation you have.

    OTR

    Top Pay:
    OTR .45 vs LTL .65

Pay for time during everything else drop and hook..waiting time.. breakdown... road closure... fueling..etc:
OTR LOL vs LTL $25 an hour

    Family health insurance:
OTR you pay vs LTL they pay for it (union)

    Paid holidays and sick days:
OTR LOL vs LTL yes usually about 8 paid holidays and a few paid sick days

    Sleep
OTR in your truck vs LTL a hotel they pay for or your bed

    Pension
OTR LOL vs LTL Yes (union)

    Wife and Kids
OTR you see them once a month vs LTL you see them at least once a week and can pay to put them through college.

There's a reason you don't see LTL companies with truck stop ADs everywhere like OTR companies have.
They don't need it, the good smart drivers come to them.

Btw that info is from union LTL companies, info about them is easily found.

It's for the most part no different with whatever company you get into especially with line haul... New drivers for company = short runs... The more time you have the better pay check....

But don't be fooled... You have guys that have 10-15-20 years that want bear minimum of hours/work so even someone with 10 years he might be short because he don't want to drive...

I bid long on my sheet and even with 1-3 months at the company maybe once a week I would get the longest run from the terminal becuase alot of guys just dont want to drive or spend a whole 11 behind the wheel so they would bid short, but when a guy with alot of senority would bid short he would get all the VIA run's which would mean he would leave the the dock of a certain terminal and go do a drop and hook at another terminal and then head back to home base and still make good money, getting a good mix of dock work, driving, and drop and hook pay... LTL you getting paid from the time you walk in till the time you leave... Drop&hook, pre-post trip, fuel, break down, dock work, wipe your butt... pay pay pay

Never had a interest for OTR, Unpaid baby sitting load while sleeping in companies equipment and the awesome brochures advertising get 4 days off per month. No thank you. Respect the OTR folks, Just not for me. I like to be active and do maybe 2 dozen stops/bumping dock per day or working the terminal (P&D).

First started out compared Local work VS OTR, Then LTL peeked my interest.
I looked at my time Local Gigs/LTL total hours vs OTR paid time total hours. Then throw in Benefits and Pension. No comparison. Apples and Oranges. All depends what your time is worth. No right or wrong job.

RR started a rant thread. If anyone is interested to read it, Plenty of cons to the job. Not mayberry.
