I do realise that there are other threads for W/S here, but my query is specific to their LTL side. The reason that I didn't post this in one of the other threads, is that it would, in all probability, get lost amongst the myriad other posts.

I aim to apply for W/S, out of their Youngstown OH terminal. I would like to know how much scope for LTL this terminal provides, and what it entails, in terms of miles, pay, average number of stops per day, pay per stop, hometime. Would it be realistic on my part to expect to be home for weekends, or would I be out for weeks on end ?

Any relevant information would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks a bunch.

I don't know about Youngstown specifically, but there are often local/regional runs that are available. I know Conover, NC is doing a lot of that right now. It really depends on when you come in and what the needs of the company are.

I also know that some people have been ticked off at W/S because they were hired for a local/regional gig, and after a while, they ended up OTR because the freight changed and the local wasn't there any more. It's not W/S being mean, just how the freight changed.

    hi
in 2005, i ran short line ltl in new york, nh, maine and vermont.
i delivered furniture to small mom and pop furniture stores in out of the way places.
8-12 stops in 2-3 days based out of north new jersey. $225 a day and could do one 3 day run and a 2 day run. sometimes a bigger circle and it took 4 days.
I had to tailgate the furniture and some was heavy, but I got in shape fast.
Many places that could not fit a 53 ft trlr. gps is essential for this work.
    that was my experience

ok, the oh term is the one term that people usually wait for to get in with the short line gig, being new to the company they would most likly make u go otr for the first 90 days, to prove that ur a worker, not a slacker, then ull have to call the right people, and talk to them about it, u could call missoula and talk to someone about this, prob the smart move to make,
driven away, having a gps is far from an essential tool for this job, yes it helps a lot, but having a gps will also bring u to low clearence bridges as well, just be smart when using a gps in any part of the ne, including ohio
also, the 225/day is a thing of the past, the pay is miles and per stop, out of the conover term the pay is 20 buch per stop, and u still tailgate the furniture, and yes, u will get in shape quick.

Thanks for your response, S2B. Since you're from PA, I guess that it's safe to assume that you have passed through the Youngstown terminal quite often. What's your opinion of the place, the way that things are run there, and the people who work there ? Also, if one were to go OTR out of Youngstown, what would be the freight lanes, and hometime ?

I pull pneumatic bulkers in super b-trains, and also have the experience, and ofcourse, the endorsement too, in pulling turnpike doubles. I plan to be moving to the West Middlesex area in western PA, which is about 30 mins ( if that ) from Youngstown. As to my current employer ( with whom I've been working for several years ), I don't feel comfortable with disclosing it on this forum.

I drive for Watkins Shepard out of the lakewood terminal, i do regional LTL work for them in washington and canada, its not easy coming by a local/ regional job with the company and typicly they prefer you to work in the company at least a year before they offer it to you, a big reason for that is all the tight places you get yourself into and they would like to know what type of driver you are also
