I have a 96 cat engine I am wanting to keep the engine running strong someone told me that I can use like Lucas additives to help the oil, clean pistons and such. At the same time someone told me not to use that crap does anyone use Lucas additives is it efficient or a waste. Bad for the engine or good?

I would not ever use it. Use good oil and maintain a good schedule for changes.

You can run one over a million miles using only Rotella 15W40. Lucas will certainly lighten your wallet though.
I have a 8PN I bought brand new in 1995 Tried the lucas Kool-aid a few months back in the last century. At over $20 a gallon for the fuel additive and no improvement I wised up. Wish I had those Andrew Jacksons back.
What I do use is a Fuel Preporator and a Spinner 960 centrifuge bypass oil cleaner. -
I notice a big difference in my boxes using lucas, I use it in my rear ends, transmission and wheel hubs.....(everything is super quiet and have big Miles on them)
As for the motor..I Use it there too But in fairness,i Cant tell so much there if its helping or not. -
The only thing Im concerned about is the oil stabilzer. I don't if it works on my mbn.

I have had many engines apart over the last 30 years. I can tell as soon as I get into an engine if lucas has been added to the oil. It feels like karo corn syrup has coated everything. And seem to find more of a sludge type build up in the top of the engine.
The lubricants are better than they have ever been, why tamper with them? -
I did engines at a large truck dealership, one day the tranny guy showed me a transmission that was destroyed, gears burnt. and bearings failure. He had called the eaton representative for guidance. it was an 18 speed, the rep came over looked in and said Lucas no warrenty.
As an engine guy it is a thickener, the oil in a modern engine is used extensively as a coolant the oil is made to flow to the different components in a certain manner, like the piston cooling nozzles you thicken the oil and the flow is reduced, the piston gets hotter.
I recomend people change the oil more often, and use the best filtration available, that really works. fuel and oil additives, never seen one that did anything positive.
Just a thought! -
Only thing I use OCCASIONALLY is the 5th wheel lube when I'm out of grease. Expensive yes, but I'm anal about keeping it lubed so...

I got a 12.7 Detroit with 1.4m and no work to it so far. Guess what? 20% Lucas in every oil change. Ya it may thicken the oil. In my powerstroke, I did a test and I gained one mpg when running Lucas. I run rotella 15-40 oil in both. Also had the transmission modified and with Lucas racing fluid, I dropped the temperature it run at by 22°. I run it in everything from my semi to my truck to our tractors. For what it's worth, Honda did a test at a farm show I went too. Filled a 5hp with oil and another one with Lucas. Ran them a half hour and drained the cases. Oil seized up in 30 minutes. 3 hours later, the one that had Lucas in wasn't even making noise. Made me a believer. Fuel additive gains me about .5 mpg and I use one gallon less per hour on the tractors when I'm in the fields. They make good products.

For what it's worth dept., There are so many factors to consider here. I think Lucas makes a quality product. For me, they've always done what the mfgr. claims. As far as adding to the engine oil expecting like new performance, no additive in the world is going to do that. Lucas Oil was started by Forrest Lucas, who himself was truck driver, and was unsatisfied with the products available at the time. If you decide to use any additive product, please pick Lucas, as Lucas Oil is a proud sponsor to NHRA drag racing, as well as many other charitable organizations. ( no, I don't work for Lucas, maybe I should)
