Lumpers in my biz all take cash. How do I document lumper expenses for tax write-off purposes?

That is what an experienced driver at work told me, strangely he didn't ask me to sign any receipts the day I worked for him.

Is a handwritten receipt really sufficient for IRS purposes?

The IRS accepts handwritten receipts. Don't forget to get the Tax ID of the lumper service or the individual (Soc Security Number).

I hate this topic, glad I pulled a flat. legit expense that's hard to legitimately document. Document it the best you can, worst case in an audit you have to explain yourself and go from there. 35 years as an OO I was never audited. But I was always prepared the best I could be.

Not sure you’ll have luck. Or shouldn’t anyway getting a SS number but just get a receipt book
Have them sign and print their name

If audited by the IRS I’m sure they have seen and know about this already plus if audited the few bucks on lumpers most likely isn’t why they are there in the first place

You can buy a receipt book at Walmart, you fill it out and have the lumper sign it. Always Always Always get a receipt for any and all expenses
