Ma and Pa Shops?

    Hello, fellow American Truck Drivers. (That's in caps cuz you are worthy). I've been hauling local bulk commodities for about a year now and was looking to expand my horizons, get some otr experience. Since most carriers won't hire someone with little experience, I signed on with a ma and pa shop and have been working at getting the truck on the road. The bosses "brilliant" daughter decided to book a load today with absolutely no chance of a backhaul.She booked a rate of 2.5 linehaul with a 174 percent deadhead over linehaul ratio. When I told her she was going to loose her ### in fuel costs she said "It's not going to cost that. The truck is already full of fuel." This is not a joke. True story. It was decided in the beginning that I would find contracts and book the loads for a hefty price. For some reason, she took it upon herself to do this for me. Now, I'm obviously, questioning whether or not I made the right decision getting involved with them.

    Many carriers will hire you with little to no OTR experience.
    Depends on your location, city/state though.

    Western Express
    Schneider
    Paschall Truck Lines
    R.E. West
    Big-M Transportation

    and several more if you're in their hiring area.

    Yeah, thanks for the info. Schneider runs lanes through here alot, along with CRST Malone and quite a few others. Big Corporate America spooks me though. I've heard alot of horror stories about rookie drivers getting the shaft from these companies. I was trying to stay away from that and take baby steps. I don't want to get myself in over my head. Maybe I already did. My heart is in flatbedding and I really don't know alot about reefers and vans. Any advice you can give about dealing with loadboards and brokers would be greatly appreciated.

    Western Express has a flatbed division

    Also try these flatbed; ignore any OTR experience required and submit the applications anyway. They have online apps. The worse that could happen is "Application Denied." :

    System Transport
    Roehl
    Melton Truck Lines

    For loadboards & brokers look at OOIDA website. OOIDA is an organization for owner-operaters and small fleet owners. Membership is about $35.00 or so a year.

    Looks to me a good opportunity to learn another skill that might help you later on. You just have to let her fail and have nothing to do with her failures. Don't put yourself in a position as a scapegoat where she can blame you for failure. Always remember she's part of the family so if there's a question of who's word to believe she's going to win. As long as you're getting paid and not receiving dirt pay watch and see what happens. You never know, you might come in and save the day and the bosses see that and promote you. If it turns sour try to leave on a good note.

    Something doesn't add up here.
    You have zero over the road experience, which means you have zero hands on experience dealing with brokers or load boards. Your entire trucking experience is "about a year"running local pulling an entirely dissent kind of freight. And somebody hands you the keys and says here ya go, go book your own loads. That's facts alone should of told you to run far far far away.

    I do have flatbed experience as well....but yeah, you're right.

    I don't know why you thought you'd get treated better at a ma & pop shop than a large carrier.

    The mom & pops that treat their drivers well are the ones that require experience, because they have an expectation of hiring safe drivers & value that.

    The mom & pops that hire anything walking typically wind up shafting their seat warmers.

    work on a percentage basis,say 23%-26% of the gross,including fuel surcharge.you should do well plus gain the experience that you desire.with little to no otr,you almost can't pick and choose unless you decide to pilot some mega fleet traffic impeder.why would you want to do that if you have the chance to not? there are many times that i make enough on 1 load to deadhead back for the second.there are actually loads that pay well enough for that to happen.it is about putting the money in the bank and deadheading at times pays off.besides,it is a venture from what i gather and both you and the owners are in the learning curve.

    getting on w/mom-pop outfits ceratinly has its advantages.first and foremost,your truck may do the job it was intended to do thus you will not be relegated to ride in the pack of less than the posted speed limit steering wheel holders.please do not emulate them and wear fingerless driving gloves.

    anyway,if you are eventually given the opportunity to book your own loads,you are gaining a big leg up over just the driving experience. WIN/WIN either/or.you'll be just fine so give it a chance my inexperienced forum friend. you'll know soon enough if it isn't for you,at least give it a 4-6 month trial.heck,make it a year and all of a sudden you have 2 years experience.goodbye rookie status.hello seasoned driver that can also book his own loads because you now have those valuble contacts aquired from finding his own loads.steering wheel holders/driving glove wearers can't make that claim for the most part.

    I am hoping that you stumbled into a good situation.what does the daughter look like? good personality? easy to work with? willing for both of ya'll to make money? and on and on.

    yeah.reads as if it is an excellent opportunity once out of the starting gate.just go with it,it'll be fine-
