When I make YouTube video's with Windows Movie Maker, the video from the program looks great. The sound quality is good, the picts are clear. Movie maker makes everything easy to edit.

But when I upload it to Youtube, everything is horrible. The picts are distorted along with the sound.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong, or have any suggestions on any "free" program I can use to create YouTube vid's where I won't have this problem?

I started out using Roxio Easy Media Creator (about $65) when I video'd with a Flip Video and my first YouTube videos are done this way.
When I got a HD video camera, I recognised right away the need for a more powerful processing PC and program, so after I built a super-fast computer, I invested in Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum (about $90).

I DID use windows "LIVE" Movie Maker (the NEW version of Movie Maker) in one video as a test, that turned out pretty good.

SO the question would be what format file are you starting with,
    what is the frame rate,
what format and frame rate is the completed video.
It would also help to know how fast your video card is and does it share resources with your RAM?

Its how you encode it, codec you use, and the bitrate. Once you upload to YouTube they will slim it down to save bandwidth with their own codecs. Best thing to do is use the highest bitrate you can that fits in their guidelines and upload it, since using higher bitrates will increase file size. That or trying using different codecs and experiment with small videos till you have a setting you like for YouTube. I use Sony Vegas and you can customize a bunch of codec/quality/sound settings for different things.

I down loaded Vegas... And it's very confusing... I'm just starting out doing this... So a lot of it is greek to me. Codec's, birates... I don't have a clue... It gives me something to work with...

    Thanks

    Not GREEK, but GEEK.

Stick with Vegas, while it may be confusing (at first) it it actually a simple program to use. I am learning new stuff every-day.

One thing that helps since youtube upgraded to HD capability is to upscale your video to 720p before uploading it to youtube. That makes it think that it's native hd video and will put the option to watch it in hd on the video. It's a lot clearer that way if you do it right.
