I have to get a DOT Physical once per year due to high blood pressure and sleep apnea. If I were to lose a lot of weight and lower my blood pressure so that I no longer have high blood pressure and sleep apnea, would DOT make it so that I could go back to only needing a DOT Physical once every two years?

I think so. It's really the doctor's decision I think. I know my Dad was on a 6 month card right after his heart surgery, and he was able to get a 1 year card later on. So I don't know why you couldn't go from a 1 year to a 2 year card

Maybe your blood pressure will go down once you figure out how to get your doors closed. :dontknow::p

Yes. It doesn't automatically happen, but it can be done.

I actually asked this exact question when I got my DOT physical this year and the doc said “lose weight and get to where you don’t have sleep apnea (which I definitely have currently, so I’m not complaining) and you can get a 2 year card”.

Yes, if you no longer need to take medication and your blood pressure is within normal range. @Moose1958 will know the answer

I've been on a one year card for a lot of years. Didn't know you could ever go back to a 2 year.

To the best of my knowledge, there are no regulations that say either way. I will say this about the topic. I think you can get a 2-year card if you can get a clean bill of health from a family doctor and can take a sleep study and have it come back negative. This is an extremely difficult point to get across. The FMCSA generally has left so much of the physical things to the MEs. If you have a history of OSA and BP issues and have been getting one-year cards be careful to make sure you list this on the new physical long form. The FMCSA does audit the physicals from time to time looking for doctor shopping. It's my personal opinion you won't find a ME to give you a 2-year card without a new sleep study that shows you no longer have it. Look I know it is a PITA but it is what it is. I suspect my comment is not what you wanted to hear, but as far as I know, it is how things are. Maybe @brian991219 or @ZVar has a different take I don't know, just be EXTREMELY careful to avoid a doctor shopping charge.
