I have read up on the 6x2 and also know some that have tried them and got rid of them as soon a s possible too. They may work for some applications, but not for everything. I know for a fact they would not work for me in what I do 90% of my trucking in.
I don't anymore, but did pull full bore tankers, 2 of them a lot of the times and on some good grades at times, a guy just has to learn when to shift them, to be easiest on the drive train, somehow I have a hard time thinking a computer is going to take the surge in fluid in to acount when shifting.
Manual or automatics?

I wish all autos would burn a big fiery death and take all the collision system with them. Between the 2 of those things, im not sure i know how to drive a truck anymore

Allison automatic transmissions are tanks and I believe it's what the Military has used for years.
My old company I worked for doing roadway maintenance had a few Eaton Fuller 8 speeds in their crash trucks and they'd let any new hire hop in them and "figure it out" going down the road. Those things took a beating as well and nobody ever found a way to break them besides burn out clutches.
I have no experience or done any research on automated manual transmissions.
I wouldn't base a decision off of fuel economy because so many factors go into that. But a manual would have better resale value and when maintenance, repairs, or replacements do come, they are cheaper.D.Tibbitt, FlaSwampRat, Driver Eight and 2 others Thank this. -
I don't know. 46000 pounds on tractor by three axles. And that is up on two axles on purpose?
Crazy. -
I never thought I’d buy autos but the last three new trucks have been the x15 with endurant 12 sp autos. They are extremely fuel efficient and don’t have any of the older autos annoying traights. The automatic gets .5 to 1mpg better then the same truck and engine with a 13 sp.
Also, all my drivers including old timers love it surprisingly.86scotty and Driver Eight Thank this. -
Great info! I'm taking notes. On that resale value question, good to read that a manual keeps its value. And if I did buy an auto, I'll be looking for that Allison. x15 with endurant 12 too.
Incidentally, my dispatcher told me truck schools aren't even teaching students to drive with manual transmissions anymore. Autos. He recently took a couple applicants on their driving test in one of our manual trucks and had to reject them. They were a mess.Last edited: Oct 30, 2019

I agree. I really don't believe they shifted to autos for fuel mileage purposes. I think it was mainly to expand the driver pool.
What that has done has really opened the door to people that can't safely drive a car properly to now man an 80k lbs articulated vehicle.
It really has gotten ugly in the past 10-12 years.
I agree in the driver assist crap, too.
Beep beep beep beep all day long.
Rolling slowly in a traffic jam and someone merges in front of you... even if you let them in... BAM! It slams on the brakes.
Ridiculous.
But, it's all to aid the morons that they need to pilot these things for $40k/yrstarmac, D.Tibbitt, x1Heavy and 1 other person Thank this. -
I love autos!..... and so does my knees!
FlaSwampRat Thanks this.
