I am a Captain at a local fire department. We are looking at buying a used 2003 International 7300 4x4 with a Dt466 engine and a 7 speed manual transmission. For a variety of reasons we need a unit with an automatic. How much trouble is it to switch out the manual for the auto? Does anyone have any experience with this? At this point, cost is not the issue. I know it's not cheep.

Besides finding all the parts and bolting it together the electrical is the problem. The engine ecm and the tranns. electronics need to work together. You need a new wireing harness and maby a new ecm. (not totaly sure about the ecm). This will most likley cost more than the truck is worth. Find an Allison tranns. dealer an ask them. In my oppinion your better off finding a truck that all ready has the auto. Besides costyour looking at a headach With finding the right parts, labor cost, parts cost and time to do it. This probily aint some thing a back yard mech. can do on his own. The electrical on these is complicated.
