I guess it depends on what one uses the internet for. Gamers and people who download alot of music or movies and such need high speed access, and folks who just browse the web and do e-mail can get along fine without it.

In rural areas where satellite is the only alternative to dialup, we miss out on some of the ordinary benefits of broadband: My Wildblue satellite service won't support voice-over-internet services like Skype or Vonage, and the "lag" inherent to satellite internet makes gaming frustrating.

While I'm sure Sat feeds have gotten better. I don't consider satelitte internet to be broadband. But it's great if it's all you have.

Many people are afraid of the "always" connected idea. I think that stops them from the broadband idea. Just my opinion.

I could get along without broadband, easily. But when it only cost a few dollars more than dial up. Why?

Dial up --- $9.95 a month Actual phone line (you gotta have it) $29.95 Total $39.90 not including taxes and additional "fees".

MY DSL Extreme/Elite 6.0 (stand alone option) -- $47.95 total (taxes included)....zero fees

I could reduce this to $19.95 a month total if I wanted a slower speed. 768 down 384 up . Making it cheaper than the standard dial up option.
