hello at all,
my name is walter. i am a 53 years old bulk container truck driver from germany. here in germany i worked for a big truck-company, who delivered granulate to the automotive supply industry. my truck was a volvo 480 with automatic-gear. i drived through west-europe container to customers and the railway-station, also i already loaded by myself the container with granulate.
well, my wife, my dogs (1 husky and 3 husky-mixes) and i, we are interested to come to the usa to live and work here. my wife´s cousin lives in carver county, minnesota. there we have a place to live. we have not the intention to be blue-eyed an going away from germany without any informations before.
well, here are my questions - can you tell me about:
- journey times
- time of a shift
- tie-down
- laws about trucking in america
- permitted maximum weight
- vehicle length
- axle load limit
- why do you drive with fuller-gear and not with automatic-gear?
- maybe there are european trucks?
- what is the price of a own truck an who make the financing of this?
- is there a bulk-scene in america?
- how is it with parking areas and is there a possibility to overnight-stay?
- and finally, whow about is it with the companionship with the truck-drivers?
puh, this is a long thread and many questions. and my english is a little bit crazy
it would give me great pleasure, if there anybody to respond to my questions.
many thanks and greetings from germany
walter

Guten Tag! Welcome to the site!
Right now might not be a great time to immigrate and look for work in the trucking industry. Freight is pretty slow right now and there's a glut of drivers who aren't driving. As for the rest of your questions, others will be along shortly. -
Welcome my friend
Such good questions
And I can answer every one
Read!!!! LOL
Its all here
I would suggest reading back a good year -
thanks for answering so far and for the pretty welcome!
@biker
here in germany is it also. many driver doesn´t have a job. but i´m not only a heavy truck driver, i´m also a handcrafter in the building industry. thanks god, trucking is not all, what i can work.
@baack
thk´s for the compliment
o.k. i would instruct my wife to find an read it or you can give me links to the answers.
a good year too, for you. -
- journey times
Depends on where your load is going. A lot of us LOVE those coast to coast runs.
- time of a shift
Hours of service rules can get confusing for a new driver in the U.S. To break it down in its simplist form, you can drive for 11 hours in a 24 hour period. However, there's also the 14 hour rule, the 70 hour rule and a host of other rules that can make for some serious hair pulling for the new driver.
- tie-down
Not sure what you're asking here.
- laws about trucking in america
Ugh.. You really want to read about that? FMSCA's website would be a good start.
- permitted maximum weight
Depends on what you're hauling and type of rig. I pull a reefer and my max allowable weight (rig and freight) is 80,000 pounds.
- vehicle length
On average, your typical rig here is around 73 feet long.
- axle load limit
Again, depends on what you're hauling. For me it's:
Steers - 12,000 lbs
Drives - 34,000 lbs
Tandems - 34,000 lbs
- why do you drive with fuller-gear and not with automatic-gear?
Why? Most of us prefer manual transmissions!
- maybe there are european trucks?
Volvo is big here.
- what is the price of a own truck an who make the financing of this?
I'll let one of the owner/operator's chime in on this one.
- is there a bulk-scene in america?
Again, not sure what you're asking here.
- how is it with parking areas and is there a possibility to overnight-stay?
Parking can be a Class A royal pain in the arse! Rule of thumb is hit the truck stop early to snag a spot. Overnight parking usually is not an issue at truck stops and most rest areas.
- and finally, whow about is it with the companionship with the truck-drivers?
Again, not sure what you're looking for here.
There's a ton of good info here. Just start reading. -
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!
with tie-down i mean the saving of the hauling (is this right?).
companionship means how good is the cohesion with the drivers. -
I believe this will answer that question .
http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/rules-regulations/truck/vehicle/cs-policy.htmWalter Thanks this. -
Wie Geht's?
Zuerst brauchst Du Vier Wochen von Lastwagenschule und einer Minnesota Erlaubnis. Alle Firmen werden die Schulung erfordern. -
Walter, please do not hesitate to ask if you do not understand some of the terms used by truckers here in the States. For example, I noticed that Biker stated that he pulled a reefer, which is a refrigerated trailer. WiseOne, the forum owner, posted this link of trucker terms for us a while ago:

hello,
here is the wife from walter. my name is danielle. my husband is not so firm in english, like me. but i also have my problems with the language, because i needed english for a long time ago.
o.k. - i must say, that the german truckdrivers were friendly, but the americans are realy top- in germay we say: ihr seid spitze!!!
for a better unterstanding, my husband was a driver for a 30' aluminium box container, also called "back in box containerW with inliner. These containers are especially suitable for granulated products. Rotary valves are needed for unloading.
Another alternative for the transportation of bulk products in containers is a 30' "bag in box" container. The volume ranges between 50 to 54 m³. Inside these containers, so-called "inliners" are fixed to the walls, in which the material can be transported or stored. Like the 30' aluminium box container, this container type is especially suitable for granulated products. The unloading operation requires the use of a rotary valve. Powdered products can also be transported or stored, however, they require both special free -flow inliners and rotary valves.
do you know bulk-containers in u.s.?
in germany displace the containers the road-tankers from the highway.
its a lot easier to transport the containers with rail and ship.
danke gut
woher kannst du so gut deutsch? bist du deutscher?

danke schon mal für die antwort.
well, we where reading the links and if we had questions we would ask.
