Anyone who has been doing this trucking thing for any amount of time knows that freight dictates business, always has and always will. However, I want to share my experience at Marten Transport (the premier reefer company)...or so they say.
I spent 6 months with Marten and here is what I experienced. The pay depends on the run, basically the shorter the run, the less the pay. For example, if you run 100 miles the pay is .39/ mile, but if you run 1500 miles it is .34/ mile. Why? Secondly, is the detention pay issue, if you are late for your appointment, no detention pay, if you do not provide all the required info, NO DETENTION PAY, are you beginning to get the picture?
I understand that for some drivers doing reefer work is the only thing they want to do, I guess that is great if your lazy. I personally would rather tarp a flatbed load then sit around at Walmart or Kroeger for hours on end hoping I will be getting paid for it. Not to mention the hours you are burning up in your ELCETRONIC LOG BOOK or "Rat Box" as I call it.
My advice to you is if you are considering a job with Marten, go to a TS and ask a driver how they are treated first, then make a more informative decision......Good Luck
Marten and their false promises

So you're whining about them not paying for detention because you were late?...
That's sounds like its your fault...no customer will pay detention when you didn't make your appt time..
You've supposedly been driving for 20 yrs??..you don't know this yet??...geez.Nightwolf1975, kid_cardiac, JIMS2006C6 and 2 others Thank this. -
And you complain you wont get paid detention if u fail to provide all necessary info? Of course you wont get paid how would you feel if you dont get a P/U number from dispatch but you got everything else? Upset a little? 20yrs come on what local? Come on driver its common sense.

ALL truck companies have procedures in place. ( I think it makes for a smoother operation ). These procedures are explained in orientation, right ?
-
Do you like having 3 cents taken out of your cpm to process your per-diem pay ?

steelbeltsdrumming, Darius11, skibum_63 and 1 other person Thank this. -
At roehl we have a procedure for detention.
To claim detention you must:
1. Send in a message on quallcom with how many hours your claiming
2. Write your in and out times on the BOL and have the customer sign it
3. Write the detention time on your trip sheet.
Its a few hoops to jump through, but i got all my detention pay on my last check plus my quarterly bonus. I was thinking of going to Marten after Roehl after talking to a Marten driver. He really enjoyed working for them.
I've decided to stay where im at though. Anyway, sorry for your luck, but companies have policies for a reason. If your late for an appt. thats on YOU. -
Walmart doesn't sign Bills of laden. They just stamp it. Also I've received loads that were going to be late before we even receive them on quallcom. Maybe thats what he's talking about. Grainger won't sign them either.
-
When I said sign i meant if they just stamp it or whatever. Whatever the customer does when they receive the shipment. I write my times down if its beyond 3 hours(the first two hours are free, after that I start getting detention, if its less than 3 hours i dont bother claiming anything).
I will say i dont claim detention if its a drop n hook. Im usually in time but if its a drop n hook and it goes beyond 4 hours then ill claim. but under that i dont worry about it.
The only time I claim is when im on a live load/unload and the customer keeps me there wayyy to long. Like at a distro center i was at the other night. 6 hours, 4 claimed. -
On the bright side you wont be burning up all that time tarping your loads, so your "Rat Box" will be kinder to you in the future.DrtyDiesel Thanks this.
