I thought about expounding on what you have stated, but then I thought what the use, all is "water under the bridge". I started in 1963 and not only can we talk about the money, lets talk about the benefits and working conditions. Sure the equipment has improved, but to make a long, long story short, that is about all that has improved.
I bet I went 25 or 30 years and never was asked for my log book or medical card. Compare today! Even as an O/O leased to a union carrier, I belonged to the Teamsters, got paid in 2 checks, one for me, one for the truck. So bash the government, bash unions, just witness the results today.

The biggest problem today is supply and demand. Truckers were in high demand back in the day. Today, with all the blue collar jobs being sent to China or Mexico many don't have a choice but to go to their nearest "truck driving school" and start a new trade.

Too many drivers, not enough good jobs. Don't listen to the propaganda about not enough drivers. If we were of value they would treat us alot better.

If we had an organization with an aggressive leader, such as Jimmy Hoffa, "they would treat us alot better". I have always believed it was the government that got rid of Jimmy Hoffa. Had Hoffa regained control of the Teamsters, de-regulation would never come about. Hoffa would have shut the country down before he allowed de-regulation and the government would this, so bye bye Hoffa. But let me add, as "fractured" as the drivers are today, "organizing" would be almost impossible. The government and corporate America accomplished what they set out to do.
