I drove for May for a few months. Did western 11 and 48 states. If you have any qualms at all about your shifting, take the Western 11. You'll get plenty of practice, trust me.

for me, the 48 was mostly an I-80 run. Boston to SF, with stops in between. (Milwaukee, Buffalo, NJ, etc)

Only once did my DM question my position off route - and I wasn't. In fact, I was smack ON route (it's hard to go off-route in NV). A quick 2 minute conversation on the QC and that was that.

Had ONE problem with fueling - DM didn't catch that my reefer was low, so I ran dry in MA. You don't wanna do that, unless you are near the interstate. Noplace else sells diesel in MA :). Found a place in Boston, tanked up, pumped the primer for a couple minutes, and went on to get my load.

Never had a problem with home time. As soon as I hit the highway at the end of a home time, I'd let my DM know when I wanted to be back. I don't recall ever missing the day by more than 24 hours.

I suppose the worst time I had with May was when my truck broke. Being a 2005 Pete 379 (I loved it), they let me sit in Boise for a week while they argued with Cummins about repairing the darn thing. Eventually, they apparently decided to junk it - brought me a replacement tractor.
    I asked for - and got - another 379.

There were a couple of times where I told my DM (at the outset) that I couldn't make their delivery time and I was told to 'go with it anyway'. usually, by the time I was a day on the road, a new - more rational - delivery time was scheduled.

All in all, yeah, a good place to start. I've been driving locally for the past year, but if I were to go back OTR, I'd apply at May again.

Out of orientation going on two weeks and no trainer yet. Guess their program is working, but three trainers supposedly quit for local jobs. But........I'll wait, as this does seem a good one to start with. Although I'm in the western division, I'd be willing to run anything, anywhere. 11 or 48. Hope to get my trainer info on tuesday. Also heard applications are frozen till they can get more trainers.
    Drive safely.

Which hub are you working out of? I'm doing orientation on the 14th in Layton, UT and was wondering if I'll be having the same problem.

Is May's idle policy really that whacked out from what I'm reading? For you guys that have actually worked with them in the last year, will they truly not let you idle in say, Phoenix, when it's 100 degrees out? That just seems borderline criminal and inhumane.

What about hometime? Is it the usual one day for a week OTR, or will they work with you and give you an extra day - say 15 out and 3 in?

Are May drivers still getting enough miles to survive? I know many drivers from the other bigger companies are lucky to get 2,000 miles a week right now!

    Thanks,

    Drew

idleing is choice pay or be payed.

    Miles for me are 2500

they try to keep their trucks rolling and time off is non profit. depends if they get a load for ya.

Idle policy sucks. They don't give a crap if you are hot or not. You pay to be comfortable. They used to be a decent company but they have gone downhill. You are lucky to get above 2000 miles if you can even keep from being broke down. They don't keep the equiptment up like they used to. You better like sitting either broke down or waiting for a load or driving out of the way to their micromanaging fuel stops....or find somewhere else to work.

Wondering if any other newbies can tell me if they are being worked to the Max. Doesn't seem like a bad company, but I'm not thrilled about the only 3 days off guaranteed at home per month. Will you go on a hit list if you let your DM know that you greatly appreciate any time in your own bed that can be done thru a 34 hour restart or a 10 hour break? Prefering routes where, like they say in their recruitment page "Home time is just a day away".
Seems to me if they have to choose between someone who makes 30c a mile for a 1000 plus mile run vs one who makes 36 per mile, who do you think they are going to choose.
May seems like a good company, overall though.

So "No Pay May" is another anti-idling company? Good to know. Not like I'm thinking about jumping ship to another dumpy-company.
