Yeah the modern version is being claimed by wikipedia but this version were invented back in the early 20th century here, there is a great article in one of the traffic trade journals from the 40’s which breaks down the history and different configurations used for traffic control, I have to see if I can find it in my collection.

Roundabouts vs Traffic Lights - ACS Engineers
    Roundabout benefits

If you only look at intial construction costs, I believe a round about costs more, but over time they pay for themselves.

It's like buying tools- you can go cheaper upfront and replace more often or pay for quality.

Personally I like them because they save me time.

In Green Bay it used to take 15-20 minutes to drive from our yard to the industrial park 5 miles away due to the stop lights. 0600 on a Sunday morning, no traffic, but I have to wait for the light at the bottom of the ramp before making the left. The lights were timed great for cars, but no way for a truck to catch light number 2. After waiting another light cycle you'd make it thru light 3, but get stopped at light 4. With the roundabouts I can make the drive in under 8.

Coming off of 41 onto Main St used to have stop signs at the bottom of the ramp, with cross traffic having no traffic control devices. At the end of day it could take 10 minutes before you'd have a clear shot to make the left.

On WI-33 there are 4 or 5 stop signs and 1 roundabout between I-41 and US 151. There was an event at the fairground on Friday. The stop signs were all a giant cluster as people tried to figure out who had the right of way, or a car went past the white line blocking a truck from making a left, etc. The roundabout flowed smoothly.

The roundabout is self adjusting for changing traffic flows - ie the difference in traffic patterns between morning and afternoon commutes.

All that said, sometimes they are not appropriate and a lot of times the engineers/surveyors/builders screw up. Overall I like them.

I love honking at these idiots that stop and can't operate going in a circle.

    Like go it isn't hard.

I imagine they never went beyond those feel a farm animal or pop-up books.

I don't know what I was talking about. :D probably thinking cheaper than setting up traffic lights and that garbage came out.

I've been on this baby in Berlin. Traffic lights really mess with your lap times, but since I was in a rental... :D

Got hit by a car on my CDL road test. In a roundabout. She told the cop she was behind me but thought she could get around me. They ultimately decided to call it contact unavoidable. um yeah...
I was taught- own the middle of the entrance -if 2 lanes, straddle em both. but obviously watch both mirrors.
now that I don't hyperventilate at every one I don't mind them too much.

my first roundabout experience after that accident- offramp to the circle, miss the entrance to get to the scale, turn around behind the store (west) come back throught the circle 270 degrees, scale. badly. move tandems, back around the store and through the circle 270 degrees again. I was right that time. around the store again, back almost to the circle, and on the west bound again. w.t.a.f.
