Ok, I just Turned 21 Yesterday (August 3rd) I Currently work for Tracker Boats but wanting to do somethin that makes alittle more money.

I have been thinkin about signing for Prime ( I Live 40 miles away) but wanted to ask questions. I have read some stuff here and there but cant seem to really figure things out.

How long exactly is the Training and Orinetation.

When i get done i wanna do lease driving so my Wife and Daughter can go and dont have to really worry about missing that gas milage requirement and get fired. But how much do lease drivers make per mile.

If i go out for 2 weeks would they allow 1-2 days off easly or is it hard to do.

Im new to this and really dont know what all to expect.

My step dad and grandpa drove trucks but i was little and didnt really know much. They drove for RBX and Milkyway but were O/Os.

Also when people say talk to a recruiter is there anyway to talk to them besides placing in an Application cause i plan on waiting till after my Wifes birthday to apply (Aug 23rd.)

Thank you guys. I have been searching and reading but couldnt really figure out most of this and hoping someone would explain it to me.

The first step is to get with your bank and ask for the FDIC limit to be increased to at least $500,000. This is necessary to insure that when Prime direct-deposits your pay settlement, that the money is covered by the FDIC.

Next, ask a financial planner about an offshore tax shelter. You certainly don't want to be giving up half your six figure income to the greedy bass-turds at the IRS. When I was leasing with Prime, I invested most of my money in resort properties in the Bahamas, where I currently live in retirement.

Third, do not believe any of the BS you hear on here about leasing being a ripoff. Ask around at any truck stop... CR England and Prime drivers are some of the highest paid in the industry. In fact, CR England's top driver made more money than Warren Buffett last year.

Lastly, do not quit your job at Tracker Boats to drive a truck... you will end up in the poor house.

I only make $350 a week. SO i think truck driving would make alittle more than that.

I see its like $800 a week for a truck on avg it seems. With a truck payment and Gas prices, what are most people bringin in weekly??? If you dont mind posting.

I dont really care for my job. Over 110 degrees in the day on summer inside the building. And about -10 in the winter. And its just not something i enjoy. But from what i read it kind of seems that after everything is payed that a lease operator makes about the same as a Company Driver but with more privlages. Is this true.

ALso once you lease is your truck payment due that first week or do they allow you to run a week first to get that extra money to make the payment.

Sorry for all the questions. Just wanna make sure on everything before i sign up.

Should i go to prime to sign up or can i call somewhere to make sure they have openeings and talk to some one like a recruiter.

Most importantly do not lease with anyone. If you do that you will be missing that $350 a week.

    lilillill Thanks this.

Read through the sarcasm in my post... then read the last sentence. They don't call it "Fleece/Purchase" for nothing. The trucking industry is in a downward spiral as far as wages go. If you sign a lease deal, especially with no trucking experience, YOU WILL GO BROKE!

The only areas you might still be able to make a buck is hauling gas or pedaling groceries for a large chain store.

Take my advice, now is not the time to enter the trucking industry. Find something else to do.

Building Boats is getting pretty hard too. We range from40 boats a day to 15 a boats a day. We have 3 layoffs a year and no one knows whos goin to get it. I want somethin that i can see my family, Or as of now they could go with me after training. BUt make enough, With just bein 21 i have along way to go to save up.

At $25,000 a year, it just barely makes my bills and thats it. Nothing at all on the side. After a car payment and phone payment i had $30 last week :( .

I am going to offer you the best advice you will ever get...

    1. Do not quit your job. Jobs are very hard to come by these days.

    2. Do not borrow money.

    3. Get rid of the car payment. Pay cash for a decent used car and keep it maintained. If you spend less per month to fix it than your car payment was, YOU WIN!

    4. Make it a goal to save enough money to buy a small piece of land. Pay CASH.

    5. Build a house on that land as you can afford it.

    6. Do not ever borrow money against your house or land.

    7. Make it a goal to become a business owner. Find something you love to do and figure out a way to get paid for it.

These are the things I wish I'd have done when I was 21. I wasted so much money and time when I was younger... it's hard to drag yourself back up out of the hole when you've dug it so deep.

Its still more than you will make leaseing on with someone. You asked for advice so were giving to you. I know its the exact oppisite of what you want to hear but its the truth. You said you want to spend time with your family, trucking is NOT the way to do it. Sure if company policy allows they can ride along some days but what about when your daughter is in school? Than your wife has to be home everyday with her to get her there. Meanwhile you have been gone on the road for a month and have zero time to spend with them. Do yourself a favor dont make a hudge mistake. Keep your job and look for somthing else besides driving OTR.

Realisticaly you are going to have a rough go if you want to stay out for 2 weeks and then go home for 2 days.

I work for Prime and even I dont even recommend going lease right out of the gate.

You are 21 with a young family... if you make a mistake, or have a bad week then there is no paycheck.

The guys I know who have been leasing for a while, dont even think about going home until they have the money in the bank to make that next weeks truck payment.

I highly reccommend the training at Prime, however, as a student you will have anywhere from 4-6 weeks with no paycheck until you get your CDL... they loan you up to 200 per week to live on the road while a student... once you graduate to trainee is where you are officially hired and the paychecks start.
