How old are you? Food service is a young drivers game. Are you ready to get in really good shape? Do you mind digging though piles of product that wasn't loaded correctly, in the dark, on a stick or slippery floor because the soda syrup or cases of oil broke open because the warehouse loaded them under something really heavy? How about the warehouse loads the stops in the wrong order and you couldn't see the problem before you left because the issue was deep in the trailer? Want to unload an entire stop in a parking lot to get to the correct stop, then reload it an watch it roll and slide all over the truck on the way to the next stop because you didn't have any spare stretch wrap to wrap it? You will get in really good shape physically, but be prepared to be the person who fixes all the problems and makes the delivery happen. I did food service for a few years until my knees, arms, and back told me to find something else. You will make big money, but you will earn every bit of it. Oh, also, if you like working crazy hours, you will enjoy food service.

I've been a driver in the moving biz for 15 years. Nothing is more physical than that. I'm hoping another McLane driver
has some context specific info for me -
I've talked to a couple McLane guys and they seem to like it. I've got buddies working for PFG and Sysco doing the exact same thing and they in the mid 60k range so it pays well, but like skyviper said their working for it. Lots of small boxes that flew all over the place, sometimes you get a dock, sometimes you running down wet ramps into the street with stuff. Lots of jamming your truck in small stripmall parking lots that cars have a hard time getting into. But in the end it's about the money.

I'm doing the McLane interview in case my airgas interview doesn't go according to plan. That's how bad I can't wait
to get out of the moving game -

Its good Physical work but they pay. MBM in Denver advertising starting pay is 72k. I work in the milk delivery industry and If the dairy loses the Walmart contract I'm going to apply at MBM. McLane guys seem to get paid well too. One nice thing is this kind of work keeps you healthy. I drive a daycab and work 4 days a week so its also nice to have a life besides work.

MBM is owned by McLane. Worked for Sysco out of Philadelphia for 8 years. Everything that has been posted already is 100 % true. One thing I will add about McLane is they match, or at least they used to, $1.50 to every $1 contribution to your 401k up to 6% which is almost unheard of. Debt free company also. Hope this helps.

I did MBM for 9 years making good money. Left because they screwed me. Will never do food service again. I am an owner operator making more now than I did at MBM. Just bought a 2007 Freightliner Columbia with only 192,000 miles as my other 2007 just hit a million miles. If you have family (wife and kids) go company driver, but the work will suck as the warehouse could care less as long as the trailer is loaded and left the yard...
