What harm is going to be caused by having an inactive Dot number if you get in an accident? I was in an accident a couple weeks ago with no tag or registration on the truck. Insurance company didn't ask any questions about tag registration or dot number and neither did the police for that matter. If you can afford to shut your business down and wait for some pathetic government organization to get around to doing their job more power to you. I think the biggest risk would be getting fined for being out of state whichto be fair can be pretty expensive. I was told by a local third party DOT compliance company that they're seeing average of 120 day processing times right now for Biennal Updates.

Look, rolling with an inactive DOT number is like playing Russian roulette with your whole livelihood.
Yeah, maybe the cop or the insurance didn’t ask this time — but all it takes is one accident where a lawyer pulls your record, sees your number is inactive, and suddenly you’re the one holding the bag.
FMCSA doesn’t care if you ‘meant to’ file your update. They’ll flag you out-of-service and insurance companies will happily walk away from the claim.
The biennial update takes 10–15 minutes online if you know what you’re doing. Waiting 120 days on some 3rd party? That’s a scam.

The issue is that, at least for a while there, one could not update online in 10-15 minutes as was normal in the past. -
I’ve never seen it take as long as was said earlier. I know some folks (and even a few contractors) were saying it was taking forever, but from what I’ve seen the only hiccup was when SAFER lagged a bit. Even then it was showing in a day or two, not weeks. Every time I’ve filed it’s been same-day fast unless FMCSA’s system was acting up.

The system is now updated and the 150 form can be done in 10 minutes. But at the end of last year and into this year it was taking them 2-3 months to process 150 forms that were filled out on the fmcsa website. I ended up starting another DOT number and running that until my original one was fixed
