Hey guys...I know this might sound weird but I will try and explain it anyways. I have my CDL and all the happy stuff that goes along (full endorsements/twic/fast) - but currently working in a field that I don't want to leave (just yet) and go trucking.
With that in mind, I am planning on buying my own used rig (with cash) and have started the process.
I have my own LLC and EIN and now working on a USDOT number.
The problem is section 24:
"Circle all the letters of the types of cargo you usually transport."
...I have no idea what to put down as I am listing myself as a PRIVATE CARRIER (interstate) NOT FOR HIRE. I would suspect I could use "DD" (other) but then don't know what to declare there as I wouldn't even have a trailer, at least initially...
I have a membership with OOIDA and they have been helping me up to this point, but they too are at a loss.
I know I am not the 1st person out there to buy a rig "just to own" - but it is so uncommon that it's hard to get help. It is likely that at some point I might lease on to a carrier or pursue this further, but in the meantime it would basically be a 'show' truck for the time being.
Flames accepted, but I could really use some real help here too.
Thanks,

If your not hauling stuff commercially why would you need dot numbers and authority,....

I do plan on driving the rig, vs. just letting it sit in a field...and cops and what not don't always understand things. I can get a DOT number just for registration of plates but didnt want to restrict myself at that point. So I want to keep this totally legit.
EDIT:
I contacted the DOT. I select Item "DD" (Other) and list "Empty Show Truck".
Case closed!

Register it as a RV. Then you do not need DOT#
