I'm looking at several used trucks one is a Vovlo 770 it has 760k miles with a 500hp detroit 13sp trans $15k.
Problem is its 400 miles away from me. Any idea how to find a mechanic to check out this truck for me.
I want him to look it over in general and plug into the ecm and fax me a report.
I called the local truck dealers and detroit and they say sure we can do that just bring it in. Well that aint gonna happen i need someone to go to the truck and look over.
Also what do you think about that deal?

Not sure about this one but maybe try craigslist....although you wouldn't know eve from adam in this case. You would have to trust your instincts. Why don't you just take the time necessary and drive out there. It's not that far considering it might be a good deal AND you would know about the truck yourself. You can take your own mechanic with you. I guess you should call the dealer yourself and ask a million questions right off the bat. This will give you some idea about their character before you even step foot out your house. Get as much info as you can via phone !!

Leanright i dont have a mechanic to take and i wouldnt be able to tell anything. Once they detail it you cant even tell if it has oil leaks or not. Thats why i want someone to plug into the ecm. I asked the question cause while i could drive 400 miles to see this truck. I see other trucks much further away. I'd rather pay someone $100 or so thatn keep trapsing over the country looking at trucks. Not to mention that unless its on my way. i have to park my truck and stop working to go look.

Go online and find a Detroit Shop and/or a Volvo shop in the area where the truck is located that you are interested in possibly buying.

Unless its an auction the person selling the truck should be willing to take it to the truck shop to get looked at. If its at an auction you might be able to get a mobile truck repair shop to go look at it and pull oil samples for you. -
Josh C Thanks i'll try them.
Newly Crusin and Dl550cat Thanks anyway, i tried that before i posted and what they should do and will do are two different things. Thats why i said

Dunno why you're doing it, but personally I'd never but a truck sight unseen by myself. If you're committed, have your driver/mechanic take it to a shop run by another brand (Fliner/ Paccar, etc) and have them do a thorough inspection on it. Believe me, they will find every little fault because they will want you to look instead at their comparable used trucks.
This can also be good because they just might have a better one. Tell them you're gonna do the same with theirs tho.
