Need some wisdom from the mechanical Cat guru's.
I have a 3406B with 40,000 miles on a complete out of frame rebuild performed at CAT with just the block, connecting rods and crank reused.
Getting some blueish grey smoke at idle and while running down the road for the first few minutes it runs, the colder the weather the worse it is. Did 4 or 5 hours nonstop this morning, sat for an hour getting loaded and it smokes again after we fired it up. Blew thick smoke for a mile or two then absolutely nothing for the next 5 hours I followed the truck home.
CAT says this is normal and it's just the rings expanding. They also told us there is nothing that can be done aside from turning the HP down. They also reminded me they have not seen one of these engines in over 12 years.
I've looked at a few other 3406B trucks for sale locally (for comparison) with various amounts of mileage and rebuild states but they don't smoke, at all. Black puff at idle and while shifting but that's it.
Curious what would cause this thing to smoke? Also curious if somebody can recommend a CAT guru in NY, PA or NJ who is familiar with the 3406B.
I'd like to add that this truck pulls just fine, burns one gallon of oil in 10,000 miles (break in?), and no drop in mileage. No ID# on this engine, CAT seems to think it's an 8PN. Took the block down to bare metal, no #'s.
See photo below for example of smoke. This is after running for 4-5 hours on the HWY then sitting for an hour with the engine off at 40*F.
Mechanical CAT, smoke at idle

Not sure whats going on there but ive owned a few B models and that is not normal.
Did you replace the nozzles when in framed?
Also could be a timing issue also.KB3MMX, snowman_w900 and zx150 Thank this. -
If you tamper with it you will void the warranty. Sounds like it needs breakin. Follow the Cat Dealers instruction.

zx150 Thanks this. -
Yes, nozzles got replaced. I'll have them check on the timing.
CAT said no break-in period required, just put it to work. Only reaching out because they've done all they can do. I guess if you can't plug in with a computer you're SOL!ramblingman Thanks this. -
Make sure the timing is not too far advanced, also make sure that the nozzle number matches the piston as well as the sealing washer under the nozzle.
Look in the pressure side of the turbo for oil as well.
Since I haven't seen it and just shooting from the hip I'm thinking it may be in the timing. Does it rattle a little when you step on the throttle?zx150 Thanks this. -
Timing is retarded a few ° causing it to wetstack or load up if you will wile idleing because its not making enough combustion temp because of late injection.
KB3MMX, Pursy and cumminskid123 Thank this. -
Timing advance in front in front of the pump?
-
I'm willing to put money on the fact that the timing advance "backlash" isn't set properly on the front of the injection pump, took me 4 times to set it right the first time i did one, if its not set right, you know right away, as soon as you give it a little throttle it sputters, and farts, what have you and smokes like a b*stard

My 3408B is similar, it smokes at idle when cold but clears up when it's hot. Most likely piston rings in my opinion, on mine they are apparently earthmoving spec (keystone rings I think they said) and don't seal properly until they're at operating temp. The smoke looks blue in color in your pic so that would be oil smoke. That's my two cents anyway.
